Still confused about WideFS install

Featured Replies

I've installed and uninstalled about 4 times now so I'm not sure exactly where I'm at because something different seems to have happened every time. I did figure out that I needed to do something to temporarily get rid of the FS directory on the WideFS machine so the textures didn't all get loaded there. Once doing that here's what I did. When asked for the install location I selected C:activesky on the WideFS PC. Program installed and when I ran it I got a message that it appeared to be networked and to make sure the FS location was in the activesky.ini file. It wasn't. I assumed I did something wrong so I uninstalled and reinstalled. This time when I ran the program it just told me it couldn't find FS and needed to shut down. So I went in to the .ini file and put in the share file name on the FS PC. After that it ran, but nowhere in this process did it ever load texture files. Perhaps I'm assuming something here, but shouldn't the texture files in my FS PC be backed up and replaced?By the way, the Active Radar auto install didn't work either so I did the manual copy routine. Thanks for the help or explanation or whatever it is I need to get this right.

I guess maybe I didn't explain myself clearly enough. The texture files on the Flight Simulator PC in the texture directory are all dated 4/17/2003.The texture backup directory on the WideFS PC is empty. There are no files whatsoever in it.

I've had both PCs running several times so that isn't it. I don't get any errors. It's something to do with how I'm installing or running it for the first time, but I haven't got a clue what. I am supposed to point it to a directory on the WideFS PC rather than the FS directory on that PC, correct? At least that's what I interpret the instructions to say. Just when are the textures supposed to be copied on a WideFS install? During the installation process, or when it's run for the first time.

Hi,Have you done all of this including the sharing and the mapping?Installation

Yes I have and did. The connection is there, because I get the weather update messages in FS. I just don't have the textures in Flight Simulator.

Adding to Jim's posts, and just in case you missed it Enrico, make sure FS9 is NOT running before you start ASV. The new textures can only be added to FS9 if it is not running. Also make sure you can manually copy a file from the Widefs computer to the FS9 folder to ensure you have permissions to write to that folder.Select any file, say a TXT file, on the Widefs computer and copy it, then paste it to the drive you have mapped to FS9 on the Widefs computer.I have used ASV over Widefs since day one and do not have a problem with the textures being written to FS9.My method.Start both computers.Start ASV on the Widefs computer (I have it start in pause mode and 'All random' for the textures).Hit 'refresh' in ASV and wait until the data has been written to disk. Then start FS9.HTH

That's essentially the way I've been doing it. I'm pretty sure I don't have any access issues because I use FS Build, Squawkox, and FSNavigator and they all work without any problems. Well, FSNavigator is on the FS PC but it reads the FS Build Flight Plans just fine.I guess the one thing that I'm totally confused on is this....when do the textures change and where are they written? Is it when ASV is in the installation process, is it when ASV runs for the first time, or is it every time I run the program and fly?

Here you go, please note I had to enter the share name for the FS9 directory which I just cut and pasted from the properties. By the way, I did check the switch in the Active Environment options and it was set to manual.//ASV configuration file Build 314[General]WindowPosX = 495WindowPosY = 495DefaultWeatherFolder = C:activeskyModulesASVSuppressionCeiling = 10000SurfaceWindLimit = 10FS9Path = ERIC-MAINFlight Simulator 9CloudLayerLimit = 5LocalSuppressionRange = 100MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 59LastPlanFolder = NONEAutoVasFrequency = 40AEStartupMode = 3IncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseDisableRandomLightSelect = FalseFavorCumulus = FalseUnpauseOnReadyStatus = FalseForceTstormsWithCB = FalseAutoSetFSTime = TrueAutoConvertPlanFiles = TrueAutoRefreshAI = TrueDisableVisGraduation = FalseAutoSaveAETheme = TrueOfflinePlayback = FalseEnableVAS = TrueAutoGenVAS = TrueForceDestinationWeatherZone = FalsePreventIcing = TrueOnlineUpdates = TrueExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseDisableAllGroundUpdates = False

Hi,OK, a few things here:First, you are running the very first release of ASV. Please update. Some of your issues may go away just with that.Next, go back to that Options page and set Active Environment to ICS+Random Sky/EnvClick on the Save and Close button.Let ASVE do it's thing. Now check the FS04/Texture folder and see if the date on the cumulus1.bmp file has changed.Let us know!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

Looks like that did the trick. I guess I shouldn't have been trying to get it to work before I applied the upgrade. Anyway the file date changed to today's date. Went ahead and loaded a flight plan and lots of file date changes after that. I appreciate all the prompt answers to my questions. Definately the quickest and most helpful support I've ever received.
