Active Radar weather behind Active Sky 6 weather

Featured Replies

Hello,Today, I noticed that the weather depiction in Active Radar in ASV6 is not synchronizing with Active Sky's weather. For example, if the Zulu time in the ASV forecast shows 031751 (date/zulu time) the active radar shows the previous update time of, say 031551, even after the green update text passes by the top of my screen indicating ASV6 has updated the latest forecast for closest station. If I manually enter KJFK in the the FETCH A REPORT portion of ASV6, the zulu time is ahead of what is shown in Active Radar. Actually, this raises a few questions which I cannot figure out by reading the manual:(1) Is there a setting suppressing updates to the destination airport weather in Active Radar and/or ASV6 until I am close to it? This is what I notice happens. But I need winds a good 150 miles out so I can plan my approach runway and STAR and program it into my FMC.(2) The update button in Active radar, next to the destination airport Wx does not seem to work; the scheduled updates are set to 10 min intervals but I cannot synchronize Act. Radar with ASV6 even manually with the update or even the update all button in planning section. Is this normal?(3) Jim or someone else, can you please explain how updates work in ASV6 as all this may be my confusion about update intervals etc...Thanks in advance,John

Hi John,A few things:1. I am not sure what you are asking for here. Do you want supression or no or do you want the surface winds at the destination airport for planning?2. No not normal as far as not being able to update manually. Clicking on an Update button should work. It is a slower process though. Sometimes it helps manually updating ASv6 first.3. The ASv6 update interval means how many minutes pass before AS connects to our server to download data. If you force the secondary server you will get a download each time. If you force the primary server AS will look to see if an update is needed. Now in Active Radar it is a bit different. The update here means how often AR reads the AS precipitation data to draw it on the Radar screen. I believe the default value is 5 and I change mine to 1, but I have a pretty powerful machine. This update DOES NOT change the time stamp or the data on the planning screen. This is why your times do not match. You need to manually update that data as mentioned in #2 above.Go ahead and help me out for #1 and I'll be back on Saturday!Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6...development.jpg http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-proud.jpg

Hi Jim and thanks for your quick reply.1) I do want surface winds updated at the destination but I'm not at home now so I'm unsure about my current settings - I would like updates but not when say less than 50-100NM is left for touchdown. I think mine may be set at 200NM or more-I'll have to verify when I get home.2) I'll change to FORCE SECONDARY SERVER in ASV6. But if there are new updates in ASV6 with a new time stamp and data and force secondary server to update, say every 10 mins is set in the ASV6 options, once ASV6 is updated, does AR update at the pre-set AR update interval or do I have to first manually update ASV again and then manually click the update button in AR?JOhn

Hi Jim,Sorry for the late reply. Here a screenshot of my ASV6 options screen. I think I a little confused about how update suppression works - I have set update suppression range to 50NM. So does this mean I will get wind updates at the destination when I am, say well out from my distination (e.g. around 200NM from destination). It seems that METAR (winds etc...) are updated in the planning screen (TRACKING screen) when I am close to my destination-when I am, say 20-50 miles from it (though I don't recall the exact distance I see the latest destination updates in tracking). By 20-50 NM, I am already decided, with or without latest metar, which approach and runway I'll be using because no updates occur to the winds when I am 100-200MN out after I press the UPDATE button. This is usually when I decide on the final approach and landing runway (when flying offline, not when on VATSIM).Also, even after manually updating ASV6 with DOWNLOAD or REFRESH buttons, then clicking UPDATE button next to destination airport or UPDATE ALL button in planning screen, the METAR timestamp, winds etc... do not change. They only seem to change at what seems to be a pre-determined distance from the destination airport as mentioned above and this DOES update AR when I'm at this distance but manually forcing an update does not work.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again,Johnhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/144449.jpg

Hi...FYI..Update suppression has nothing to do with distance from destination. Update suppression is controlled only by the "Suppression Altitude" setting. Updates, while airborne, will be prevented from starting when below this altitude. It should be at about 4000ft for GA operations and perhaps 10000ft for airline ops.Local suppression is based on the suppression range, which defaults to 100nm. This prevents changes to any stations within the suppression range, which prevents visible weather changes (which would otherwise be immediately depicted with terrible shifts in winds, cloud formations, etc.). Reducing this to 50nm will almost certainly cause such instant shifts and this is not recommended. Leave it at 100nm for best results. As for preventing updates when close to your destination... there is no real way to do this (because certain updates are still required for a variety of reasons regardless of range) but you can prevent the weather from changing by enabling "Force destination wx zone" and making sure a flight plan is properly processed in ASv6 (so destination is known). This clones all wx from destination to all stations within 80nm of destination. As for AR being behind, this is somewhat normal, but can be improved buy reducing the update interval in AR options (from default 5 mins to 1 minute) and by making sure your suppression altitude (update suppression) isn't too high, preventing proper updates to AR data when below a certain altitude. I recommend 4,000ft just to be sure updates continue properly.Does this help at all?Best,

Hello Damian,My main concern is why manual updates do not work in AR. If you see my screenshot, update suppression is disabled so I have no concern with update suppression ceiling, and I already have FORCE DESTINATION WX ZONE enabled (again, see my screenshot).I'll reduce my AR update interval from 10 to 5 for now but perhaps Jim can answer my question as to why I see no changes in winds and time stamps when I click the update button.By the way, my previous posting had an error - I referred to UPDATE SUPPRESSION but what I meant was LOCAL RANGE SUPPRESSION (set to 50NM).John

Hi,It could be because you are within that supression range, therefore the data does not update by design, hence the AR data is behind.Edit: The Force Destination kicks in at about 80 miles.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

Hello Jim,I believe I should disable force destination wx based on what you and Damian have said. But I have also noticed something else even with the above settings as they are (in my screenshot of options): In US airports, the destination airport usually has data showing in the planning screen even when I'm on the ground at my departure gate. This is not the case with European (i.e. NON-US) airports. I have noticed this repeatedly. After I load my flight plan in AR and click UPDATE ALL, AR usually shows destination info for US but shows nothing at all for non-us airports. ???And my distance from destination is well over 80NM when I try to get the winds info at my destination (around 150NM or more in fact) but still the manual update button does not work. Is there anything in my options setting which you notice which may be causing this?I will also try setting everything to defaults in the ASV6 options to see if it has any effect.John

Hi Jim,I removed the "force destination wx" setting and my updates in AR are working now after an update to ASV6.However, this leads me to another question about update times, versus PC system time versus FS2004 time: If FS2004 flight time is different then the PC system time and if "use system time" is selected, how does ASV time its updates? Or are updates performed once an hour or so regardless of PC or FS2004 time? How does the use PC /system time work (i.e. what exactly does it do?)HOpe you can understand that these are the sort of questions not answered by the manual as it is a brief overview only. John

Hi John,Not a problem! Do you mean at the server end or on your system end?Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

Actually, I don't know what you mean exactly when you say server or system end. It would be an interaction between the two - so that my question can be rephrased as:How does the time setting on my local PC and in FS2004 effect update frequencies of downloaded weather to my ASV6? If my FS2004 time is different, would this effect updates of weather in ASV6 or does ASV6 just look at my system time or does it simply download updates as soon as they are available on your ASV servers regardless of my local PC or FS2004 times settings.John

Hi John,OK!The data on the server end is updated every hour. The data in ASv6 is updated at whatever your update interval is set to on the Options page. The time on your PC, in FS04, or anywhere else has no influence on this!!Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

Jim and Damian,I still have this nagging issue whereby the DESTINATION airport does not update in Active Radar (for ASV6), even after I do a FETCH in ASV6 for the destination airport, then refresh ASV6, then wait for all waypoints to update in ASV6 and still the ZULU time and data does NOT change in destination airport in Active Radar, even after clicking UPDATE ALL and UPDATE buttons. This week, I did a flight where all the interim waypoints (ENROUTE section of AR) were updating EXCEPT the destination airport, even after above fetch showed a later update available and a refresh.I am thinking about re-installing ASV6 altogether as this is an original installation update dating back from Active Sky 2004. What do you think? Also, can I just install a full version of ASV6 without having to install the older versions as perhaps, installing all the previous versions may have corrupted AR. Do you think this corruption is possible? If so, how can I download and install a full version of ASV6 (if you think this will help, of course).John
