March 17, 200620 yr I did a quick flight with 1.92.5 and the visibility problem appears to be fixed. Thank you Damian/Jim. However, I ran into another problem and wonder if anyone else can duplicate. It has to do with the cloud base not being updated correctly. I think Jim and Damian are going to hate me..... :D This problem showed up on a short test flight from LFVP to CYYT with the weather listed below. I was flying offline, but I'm sure if the condtions are right, you'll have the same problem online.2006/03/09 02:00LFVP 090300Z 35020KT 5SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A3010 RMK SF8 SLP1082006/03/09 03:00CYYT 090300Z 35020G26KT 4SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A2983 RMK SF8 SLP108The problem I'm seeing, is the cloud base is not being updated. This is very serious depending on the situation you're in. If you notice, both cities are 700ft overcast. This means, 700 ft AGL (above ground level). When I start at LFVP, all is good, the cloud height is 700ft above the ground. LFVP is located 9ft ASL (above sea level). You can confirm the cloud base in FS2002 by clicking "world - weather - (leave on global) and click on "advanced weather". On the Clouds tab, note the cloud base of 708ft ASL. Click on "Temp/Pressure" tab and you'll see "altitude" of 9ft ASL. Do the math, and the cloud base should be at 699 ft AGL or rounding up 700ft AGL. This is accurate, if you slew up, at 700AGL, you enter cloud. Now the problem. From LFVP go to CYYT and you'll discover that the cloud base is only 270ft AGL, and not 700ft AGL as listed in the metar. The cloud base is not being updated correctly, and you can confirm this by doing the same thing. Clicking "world - weather - (leave on global) and click on "advanced weather". On the Clouds tab, note the cloud base of 708ft ASL. This is wrong and is a problem. Now click on "Temp/Pressure" tab and you'll see "altitude" of 439ft ASL. Do the math, 708ft ASL - 439 ft ASL and you get a cloud base of 269ft AGL. Again slewing to just under 270ft AGL and you enter cloud. I did this approach and almost didn't make it in. I was expecting to pop out of the cloud deck at 700AGL, and basically went down to minimum's (270AGL) before popping out. Challenging, but eventually it will be impossible to land in. Now try thisShut down wxRE first, and clear all weather in FS2002. When all weather is cleared, go back to LFVP, and start wxRE up. Use these metars below. 2006/03/09 02:00LFVP 090300Z 35020KT 5SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A3010 RMK SF8 SLP1082006/03/09 03:00CYYZ 090300Z 35020G26KT 4SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A2983 RMK SF8 SLP108Starting off at LFVP all is fine, cloud base at 700AGL. Now go to CYYZ.CYYZ is 567 ASL, and when a metar says OVC007, you would expect the cloud base to be at 700ft AGL. When I go to CYYZ, the cloud base is now at 141 ft AGL. I'll never be able to land....Do this one. Same as above, from LFVP to CYJF.2006/03/09 02:00LFVP 090300Z 35020KT 5SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A3010 RMK SF8 SLP1082006/03/09 03:00CYJF 090300Z 35020G26KT 4SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A2983 RMK SF8 SLP108CYJF is 705 ASL and LFVP is 708 ASL. Doing the math, the overcast deck will be 4 ft AGL, and it is. Even though the metar for CYJF says I have 700ft overcast, when I get to CYJF, I'm in fog, maybe 1/8th to 1 / 2 visibility at most. In this example, I'll never be able to land, even though the metar says 700ft overcast...Any suggestions? Thanks again for visibility fix.....Cheers RJPS: I just confirmed weRE 1.92.4 has the same problem..
March 17, 200620 yr Commercial Member Hi RJ,While I don't have FS2002 to test, I think I know what is going on. You are changing locations after the globalized overcast layer is set to 709MSL. Changing to any other location with a different elevation would indeed result in the wrong cloud base until a new weather update is performed. This is something that cannot be changed. I would recommend performing a refresh after changing locations to make sure the weather is updated appriopriately for your new location. Best, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
March 17, 200620 yr Author Hi Damian.... Sorry to be a thorn, but I was actually flying this afternoon when this problem happened, I was not just going here nor there. I was flying in cloud for almost 30 minutes before I broke out at 270AGL. wxRE is set to do metar updates every 5 minutes, but it failed to update my cloud base. Weather changes appeared to happen ok, but the cloud base did not change. Thats when I started jumping around, and tried to figure out what was wrong. Anyways, I can sit here and click on refresh until the cows come home, and cloud base is never fixed, or refreshed. Clicking on refresh does NOT fix the problem. It's too bad this cannot be changed. I don't find it very enjoyable, jumping out of the sim every 5 minutes and clicking on refresh. Besides which, clicking on refresh every 30 seconds does not help... Oh well, thanks anyways...
March 18, 200620 yr Commercial Member Hi,I see..In that case I would recommend checking the option "Disable cloud transitions" as it appears it is this feature which is preventing the cloud base from updating.. the change from one location to another isn't large enough to force the visual depiction shift that this feature tries to prevent. You could also use destination force so everything is forced to your destination ID (and appriopriate elevation figures) for no surprises.Hope that helps, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
March 18, 200620 yr Author I put a check mark in the box to "disable cloud transitions", (a feature I'd hate to lose) and this did not help. Same problem.Leaving that checked, I then checked "Destination/Force", clicked on wx briefing, and set my destination. Still the same outcome. Clicking on the refresh button has no effect on cloud base. It's stuck too my departure airport cloud base. (if that makes any sense).Note: If I go from LFVP to CYYC, wxRE works fine, with out hitting the refresh button. It sets the cloud base to 700 feet. 2006/03/09 03:00LFVP 090300Z 35020KT 5SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A3010 RMK SF8 SLP1082006/03/09 03:00CYYZ 090300Z 35020G26KT 4SM -SN DRSN OVC007 M03/M03 A2983 RMK SF8 SLP108It works, because CYYC is 3533ft ASL. The Cloud base is set to 4232 ft ASL. Doing the math, 4232ft - 3533ft = 699ft AGL, which is 700ft. Slewing up, confirms it's correct. It appears to me, that wxRE can't handle cloud base changes when the cloud layer, and airport elevations, fall into that "grey" zone, or should I say "cloudy" zone..Any other ideas?
April 5, 200620 yr Author BUMP..... AGAIN... Any other ideas? Please don't lock this thread, but instead show some support for a product that you still sell. :-lol
April 5, 200620 yr Commercial Member Hi RJ,Don't worry, we only lock threads if they get out of hand... Please move this back to e-mail and I will dig up FS2002 and get it installed so we can troubleshoot this and find out what is going wrong and what possibly can be done to change the behavior. As this hasn't been reported before and I can't get the same kind of effect with FS2004, I am guessing that there is something specific to FS2002/FSUIPC and/or your options setup. Anyhow, please e-mail me again [email protected] with your current wxre.ini and I'll start testing ASAP. Thanks!Best, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
April 12, 200620 yr Author I just sent the Email.....Thanks Damian..PS: You can see this problem in FS2004 as well, you have to look at the numbers.... I explained all this in the email..
