May 13, 200620 yr I've only just started using AS. The first flight was great!! But the next few have been causing my frame rates to drop to 5 from 25!I'm using the default settings as well as lowering some settings in FS 2004. Does that radar run in the background?
May 13, 200620 yr Hi,All .dlls are loaded into FS04, but no, Radar does not run in the background. Some suggestions:Use lower resolution clouds.Lower the Cloud Draw Distance in FS04.Limit your cloud layers to 3.Make sure your drivers are up to date. Also, it helps if we know your system specs and other programs running with FS.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter
May 15, 200620 yr Author Thanks, that seems to have helped. I'm running FS on an Intel Celeron 2.8 gh machine with 1 gb of ram and a Sapphire Radeon x300 SE video card. This card is probably the weak point in my setup? It has only 128 mb of ram. Whenever I pan around, the scenery and or colours of the plane that I'm flying doesn't fill in right away.
May 15, 200620 yr Commercial Member Hi,Not familiar with that video card, but your processor is definitely a weak point. I generally stay away from Celeron processors at all cost except for very 'casual' computer requirements without graphics/processing intensive applications. Works ok for a web/email computer and that's about it. Might want to seriously consider upgrading for a better FS experience. As a rule of thumb, I use ATI cards costing $250+ to get the best cloud performance. X800 seems to be a good 'bang for the buck' value.Textures taking time to load (i.e. external view pan) is a sign of lack of onboard texture memory, so yes the 128mb might be hurting you here. In general, ASv6 is not going to slow things down much further than default FS9 real weather. Add the DXT cloud option, reduce the max cloud layers down a notch, and you should get even better performance. In your case however I am not sure you're going to get the 'high-res' result you desire with your hardware. You're going to have to turn things down a bit.Best, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
May 20, 200620 yr >All .dlls are loaded into FS04, but no, Radar does not run in the background.I think that things are not so simple. Because I have purchased ActiveSky 2 days ago, I made several times the same flight with the same weather, so as to try different settings, and found that ActiveRadar settings may affect FS performance, even when ActiveRadar is hidden.- before ActiveRadar was opened, I had about 20 fps.- I opened ActiveRadar, set the Detail to High and selected the Alternative rendering method. This resulted in 2 fps (not a surprise, consistent with the documentation).- I hid ActiveRadar and found that the frame rate was still low, regardless of the view (note that the documentation says that Ctrl+F12 hides, not closes, ActiveRadar; the shade might be significant).- Finally, I discovered that I could recover a normal framerate, provided I hid ActiveRadar when it was NOT in Situation mode.Presumably, there is still something running in the background, a resource not released as it should, a video driver bug?My video board is a Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT, stereo drivers 78.01 or 71.84.I also noticed 2 odd things, that might help trapping the bug or finding a workaround.Firstly, as suggested by the documentation, I upgraded the video drivers from 71.84 to 78.01 which is the last stereo version, and then installed ActiveSky. I found that when ActiveRadar was visible, the lower part of the screen was black, ActiveRadar exclusive; I also noticed that in the flight creation window of FS, the preview of the aircraft was also black (in full screen mode). I reverted to the previous 71.84 version, and both black screen anomalies were fixed.Secondly, I found that, in stereoscopic mode, the image made for the right eye was
