The wind when landing is totally wrong

Featured Replies

When I tried to land at 26R CYVR, the wind was about 9ktsThen I did a Go Around at an VOR and tried to landed at 26L again.Things happened at about 2500ft when I tried to intercept the ILSThe winds started to alternate suddenly to about 22kts, making the A/C could not align with LOC.I had already suppressed update below 10000ft and after that I checked the weather of CYVR, and the wind should only be a few mphThat's what happened last night, what's the causes

Hi,At 2500 that would be the 3K winds aloft. What were those? There can be a big difference between surface winds and winds even at 3K, especially in the Canadian wintertime.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

I was flying at CYVR yesteday. What you observed are strong gusts in the surface layer. Absolutely realistic.

>I was flying at CYVR yesteday. What you observed are strong>gusts in the surface layer. Absolutely realistic. But why the surface winds before Go Around and after Go Around are so different

Hi,It could have been that the FSUIPC smoothing had not had a chance to work yet or that the smoothing process was still going on.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

I get the same situation...Aside from issues I have reported with weak wind gusts...after landing, I will run a weather refresh and get very different weather, usually the correct weather according to the METAR.Yes, I have Force destination winds, ALT suppression is set to 10,000ft...it's like AS6 does not give the correct destination weather until your wheels hit the ground (or at least I am getting weather that is older...like old as in a couple hours ago when I processed the flight plan, the DEST weather seems to get locked in until after wheels on the ground then force a refresh... If I force a refresh after landing, I get the up to date weather. If I force a refresh within 40nm of destination, I still do not see the up to date weather at the destination. This is especially noticeable with low visibility METAR...I approach with old weather, land, refresh the weather, all of a sudden I get the up to date METAR conditions in FS9.AS6 text METAR display can often show the current weather being older than the fetched weather...for the SAME station/airport.Something is up.Rob.

Hi Rob,That is what suppression does, it "holds back" the weather around your plane. If you are below 10K and do a refresh, you are right you should not see anything change around you. However, the weather outside of the suppresstion range is changing so that you will be flying into the new weather. So as to help with both threads, please post your ASv6.ini file and I'll be happy to take a look.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Jim, sometimes suppression doesn't seem to work in FSX. Never observed this issue with FS9, but in FSX I get abrupt changes after updating. Is that a known FSX issue?

ok, I am confused now...if supression is supressing weather at my destination airport, then what does 'force destination' weather do? I thought by processing a plan, the destination weather would be accurate, not "held back" because of supression range/altitude.Over to you.Rob.AS6 settings://ASv6.5 configuration file Build 533[General]WindowPosX = 7200WindowPosY = 2130DefaultWeatherFolder = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9ModulesASv6SuppressionCeiling = 10000SurfaceWindLimit = 10FS9Path = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9PersonalAppDataFolder = C:Documents and SettingsRobert HallApplication DataCloudLayerLimit = 3LocalSuppressionRange = 200MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 59LastPlanFolder = C:Documents and SettingsRobert HallMy DocumentsFlight Simulator FilesAutoVasFrequency = 66AutoVasStrength = 30TurbulenceFrequency = 77DefaultStartupLocation = CYYZDefaultGraphicsFullTheme = Wx-InfluencedDefaultGraphicsCirrusTheme = Wx-InfluencedAutoSubmitGraphicsTheme = TrueIncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseForcePrimaryServer = FalseForceSecondaryServer = FalseGEProAutoSubmit = FalseUseFetchedStationforGEPro = FalseShowDecodedMBasDecimal = FalseSkyOverride = ASGFavorCumulus = FalseForceRoutePressure = FalseForceLowestCeiling = FalseUnpauseOnReadyStatus = FalseDisableWriteThrottle = FalseDisableProcessThrottle = FalseForceTstormsWithCB = TrueAutoSetFSTime = FalseIgnoreFSLocationUntilReady = TrueAutoConvertPlanFiles = TrueAutoRefreshAI = FalseDisableVisGraduation = FalseEnableGEProWideFSMode = FalseExtendedThrottling = FalseForceRouteAloftTemp = FalseOfflinePlayback = FalseEnableVAS = TrueAutoGenVAS = TrueForceDestinationWeatherZone = TruePreventIcing = TrueOnlineUpdates = TrueExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseDisableAllGroundUpdates = TrueGlobalWrites = FalseDepictFS9HazeLayer = FalseExtendTstormLayers = TrueDisableDirectWindControl = FalseVoicePlayback = TrueLocalSuppression = TrueStartupSound = FalseDisableGroundUpdates = FalseUseProxyServer = FalseFogLayerGeneration = TrueUpdateSuppression = TrueOvercastEnhancement = TrueIgnoreFSReadyStatus = TrueFSUIPCWindSmoothing = TrueLimitSurfaceWinds = FalseLimitCloudLayers = TrueAutoGlobalWriteToggle = FalseRainWithTS = TrueDisableUpperLayerGeneration = FalseVisibilitySmoothing = TrueDisableMessages = FalseAutoTimeZoneDetection = TrueUpdateInterval = 10VATSIMData = FalseZuluConversion = -5AloftPredictability = 100WindDriftRate = 0MaxCloudThickness = 10000MinStratusSeparation = 7000TAFProcessing = FalseEnforceVisibilityLimits = TrueWakeTurb = TrueStartPaused = TrueUseSystemTime = TrueDisableCAVOKClouds = FalseProxyAddress = NONE

Hi,You are correct, suppression is poor in FSX as explained in the release notes. The notes will explain it better than I!!Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi Rob,Let me take a look at things and test out the wind gusts. I may not have work on Tuesday because of our bone chilling cold weather, so I'll have some time. I will start a brand new thread with your user name as the title, because I'll want to keep your issues straight and it is easier to troubleshoot that way.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

The AS6 0100z DEST weather at YYZ departing YOW in the AS6 plan was showing winds 270/18-24. I flew the planned route, 40 mins later I forced a refresh 50nm from touchdown in Toronto...the AS6 METAR display for CYYZ then showed current 0200z (0200z CYYZ METAR winds 260/22g27) correctly. This updated 0200z surface wind did not get in to FS9, I landed with winds 270/18g24, as was the older 0100z weather. Until I descended below ~3000ft, the weather in FS9 was as shown in AS6 display. Into the surface layer, FS9 winds changed to reflect the 0100z CYYZ METAR, 18g24 (which gusted a very weak 18-21 in FS9). It appears at this point the issue is the surface winds not being updated. The plot thickens...I pull off the runway, shut down and re-start AS6. Hey presto, I got the up to date 0200z AS6 weather showing correctly in FS9, winds blasting away as reported for 0200z at CYYZ, 22g27...and I am seeing the full gust in FS9. This is nuts I say to meself. It would appear AS6 clings to the 'older/last' 0100z METAR DESTination surface winds as shown in the AS6 Navlog after the flight plan was processed...the newer DEST surface conditions reported with @ 0200z were possibly not sent to FS9? At least FS9 did not get/apply the 0200z surface winds until after a complete restart of AS6. It seems odd I forced a refresh on approach, got surface winds from an hour old (0100-18g24) in FS9 depsite on approach to DEST airport, AS6 FETCH showing CYYZ surface winds 0200z-22g27. This data/weather info was never shown/sent to FS9 until after I landed and did a complete AS6 shut down/restart & refresh. It's late, I am babbling....clear as mud?And it is freakin' -25C outside...with gusting winds, of course :-)Thanks for taking the time to help!Rob.

Hi Rob,Doing a refresh in AS will not update stations within your suppression range, wich seem to be 200nm when looking at your ini file. The metar in AS have nothing to do with whats in FS if that station was within this range during a refresh. Sometimes the metar will have a RMK SUPPRESSED at the end if its indeed supressed. It might also show RMK OLD if its from a previous cycle and new wx is available. Both these remarks are not consistent though. AS doesnt always add it for some reason. You need to understand the suppression. AS doesnt write to any wx station within that radius of your aircraft. Only way to get new wx, if you are within the suppression range, would be to clear all weather and then do a refresh. So basically if AS get updated wx from server when you are within the 200nm of your destination it wont update the station.I have seen this happen many times. Landing in poor conditions because the suppression was in effect for my destination. But then after landing AS was able to update and it improved.Lower the suppression range to keep the chance of old wx to a minimum.Depending on where you fly and how low the range is you could see wx changes around you every time AS update. In areas with a lot of wx stations like in the US, you can set it as low as 80nm and not see much if any sudden changes due to AS updates. But in areas where there are few stations they might be 100nm or more apart, and there a 80nm radius will result in visual instant changes after an update. If you want to have up to date wx no matter where you are then remove suppression completely, both range and altitude. Of course this will make wx change instantly at your aircraft, and every time a new cycle is in effect it can cause sudden wind changes and more.Hope this cleared up a few things.PS! RTFM :(
