Some Advice Needed

Featured Replies

I finally bought a Radeon 9800 Pro. I decided to order it from Gateway since they said they would warrant the purchase and installation. They also matched the price ($299) I saw it was at Best Buy. Well, I just opened it up, and here's what I found. A card in a static bag in a generic Gateway box, a Gateway installation guide, and an invoice, for an ATI R350. What's more, no software! I checked the ATI website and entered R350 in a product search. It came back with the 9800 series, and something about a former name for the 9800. I'm concerned that I received a cheaper or older built version of the 9800 Pro, and am curious as to why I never even got any software. I can always get an updated driver from the website, but I wonder if there is any other software I would need. Gateway could not understand why I didn't get software and claims the R350 is the 9800 Pro. I just want to make sure I wasn't taken. I could see paying considerably less if it is less of a value than a store bought one, but not for the same thing. What should I do?? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Tom

I would send it back. Sounds like they sent you an OEM package but at retail price. No way would I accept that. Either they send you a full retail package of the 9800 Pro are the reduce the price to better reflect OEM status. Even then I would make sure the card is really the same as the 9800 Pro using product/serial numbers.

R350 is the VPU/chip name of the 9800pro so you're okay as far as getting what you wanted. In terms of package, then if they matched the price to a retail package (which will more often than not include a game or two etc.) then they may have undercut you a little (but not much) by sending out an OEM version of the card.As far as driver/install discs go, forget them anyway. You're better off downloading the latest Catalyst drivers from the ATI site. The slight offest in cost that you 'lost' out on by not getting a retail package that perhaps included a 12-24 month old game was probably better spent for you in Gateway honouring the existing warranty on your machine to allow you to install it etc.I wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy the 9800pro...
