Looking for HD advice

Featured Replies

Currently have an 80G HD on my pc (XP P4 2.53 1G RDRAM). The hd is partioned C - H. Instead of making CD or DVD backups, I would like to add another HD so I can have a mirror of mycurrent in case anything happens. Is it possible to do this and have it bootable also? Also, would you recommend an internal or is an external a possibility. Also looking for suggestions on the proper way to do what I' asking!ThanksRick

Hi.Yes, you can do what you want. There is more then one way to accomplish this, and it can be done on an internal and or external drives. You will need a utility like Ghost and or you buy a WD drive you will get it with the drive.Ideally, you would create a partition on your second physical drive, or it can be on a Logical drive, that is the same as your OS, or whatever you want to back up, run this utility, typically from DOS level, if this is the OS partition and you are done.Depending on the size and speed of your drives you can expect the process to take about 2 hrs. for a 30Gb partition. If you want to run the old, Ghost 6?, that comes with a lot of mother boards, but it cannot write to CDs, that you should be able to find easily. If you get a new drive enquire about this utility from WD and Maxtor and make sure you can return the unit if it does not come with it. Post here for more info or help. TV

Do your mainboard support raid? That is a nifty setup. Run Raid 1 though you loose half the storage space but that will automatically back up everything :)Otherwise Ghost is really handy.
