December 7, 200421 yr I have the TrackIR 2 and have no problems running it at 60fps as well as 30fps on a 2.6ghz P4 with 1GB Ram and a 256MB 5900FX Ultra AGP video card.I think the manufacturer recommends 60fps, because at that rate the sim appears to be entirely smooth. Where as at 30fps you can see the frames when panning around with the view. Its not too bad though, and certainly doesn't keep me from enjoying it at 30fps.For helicopters, it definitely provides a entirely new level of immersion. Especially when in a hover, and you want to take a quick look out the side windows as you rotate around to a nearby helipad. Or perhaps keep your landing spot in view (for example looking down through the chin windows of a Jet Ranger) all the way through the approach. Great stuff.I can not say that I use it 100% of the time though. I have a feeling that the TrackIR3 is more what I need, and probably I would use it 100% of the time. I just have been reluctant to spend more money, when I only bought the older version not too long ago.I think the new options for full axis movement, will help make up my mind. But to buy both packages (TrackIR3 PRo with the new full axi package) is something like $200. So it is a fairly serious purchase.Jordan Moore
December 7, 200421 yr Have you tried putting your TrackIR 2 on Ebay or something? I actually manage to get quite a good price on it but then it
December 7, 200421 yr Probably just a stupid suggestion, but, it would seem to me that, if you would like to get TrackIR, since the monitor is at a single distance, perhaps you could get a pair of reading glasses for the distance that the monitor is from your head, and just use these glasses for FS'ing. I don't know what your prescription is, but, if cost is an issue, I bet you could find a cheap pair at your local supermarket or drug store. I've seen racks of them before.Thomas
December 7, 200421 yr Mad Dog,Thanks for the setting, much appreciated.CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
December 8, 200421 yr Guy... I seriously recommend the TIR 3 Pro with the new vector upgrade... Go out and buy Pacific Fighters and get a coupon for $30 off... The coupon basically pays for the sim and...You get the joy of flying the best WWII simulator around... Excellent physics, flight model, damage model, etc...It's a deal... Runs out by Dec 31 though, I believe...
December 8, 200421 yr Caveman before you jump the gun sadly it looks like there will be no 6dof support for Pacific Fighters. You will still benefit for it since it can run in 2dof mode but you won
December 8, 200421 yr Yes, I know Oleg chose not to incorporate support of 6DOF into PF... It's still a great improvement though, even in 2D mode eith the new algorithms...I was just proposing an PF buy to get the discount and basically get this monumental sim for free...
December 8, 200421 yr Author Commercial Member The idea of actually being able to peer over the glareshield or actually move down to the FMC all with head motion just sounds so cool - I don't know if I'm gonna be able to wait till Christmas! February 28, 200521 yr If you're only getting around 24 FPS currently ...1) Do you think the Track IR 3 Pro will work ok?2) Does it acutally reduce the FPS by very much, ie. will it take much of a performance hit on FS2004?Many thanks,Cheer's ... Captain K.
March 1, 200521 yr I have the regular, not the pro version. Will answer questions in reverse order:2. Impact of Track IR 3 on framerates is negligible (task manager shows only 1-4% of CPU cycles). 1. The higher your framerates, the smoother your panning will be. I have most of my sliders high, and aim for 12 fps. I'm quite happy at that level. My advice: if you can afford it, try it. If you don't like it, send it back. Most people end up liking it a lot, as you can see from this thread and others like it.One more note: I got this in early January. Until a few days ago, I was using a dot on my forehead. This works pretty well, but wearing some kind of billed cap will make the tracking more responsive. I don't like wearing hats, because they mess up my hair, so I'm using a tennis visor. Took one of the larger, square patches that came with TIR and stuck it on the end of a small binder clip. Clip goes on bill of visor. Works great, and doesn't mess up my hair.
March 1, 200521 yr Anyway make SURE you get the Vector expansion as well. Saving 50$ by just getting the TrackIR 3 is not a good idea because you miss so much :). It really brings headtracking to the next level closer to Nirvana ;)
May 10, 200521 yr I just bought a TIR 3 Pro w/VE and I'm very happy with it. I'm using it on my Dell Lattitude D800 lattitude, 1.7 GHz Pentium M, nVidia 4200 Go 64MB, 1 GB Mem at 1920 x 1200. I have my FPS locked at 24 and it runs mostly between 20-24 with occasional drops to 15 flying the DF Archer with my own custom panel. I didn't notice any drop in framerate, but I didn't look too closely. However, I have a question. When I'm flying in my real airplane, and my airplane is turning, I have to slowly turn my head to remain looking at the same point. It seems, and this is only my limited experience (an hour or so of flying), that with TrackIR, once you are looking at a point, if you leave your head fixed, it remains looking at that point, even if that point is outside the cockpit. Meaning that, if the plane is turning, my viewpoint within the plane is moving, even though my head is still. Has anyone else noticed this? Am I correct? So far, using the TIR has been a little unnatural to me for this reason. I am going to try some of the suggestions for reducing the motion and perhaps adding a dead zone to see if this helps. What happens is that as I am turning to land, I am looking at a point outside, and instead of my moving my head to keep looking at a point, when I look down into the cockpit, it has moved even though I haven't moved my head (at least that's how it feels to me). I am ending up turning too early because I am having trouble judging how much my plane has turned by the amount I have had to move my head to watch the point.Hmm, guess I'll have to do a test to see if my observation is true. It could just be that I am making slight movements without even noticing it due to the accelerated motion. Wonder if getting used to TIR head motion will affect my real flying?I imagine it is just something I am going to have to get used to. I really do like the setup though. Thanks,Thomas
May 10, 200521 yr I have not noticed that? Will try to see if I can spot it when I get Fs 2004 installed again :)
