Best Way to Transfer FS9 to New PC?

Featured Replies

Hopefully, I will shortly be getting a new pc. This will mean I will need to transfer FS9 from the old one. I have a number of add ons (payware and freeware). I would assume that it would be best to ask the payware companies as to the best way to transfer their products. As to the rest (texture, scenery etc), I was wondering if I could just copy the relevant files to a cd and then transfer them to the new installation of FS9. I don't really fancy reinstalling everything from scratch. Is this the best way or do others have a better technique?Victor

Victor - It really depends on the add-ons. If they make ANY registry entries or put files in multiple folders, you run the chance of messing up. That said, the way that I did it was to install FS9 on the new machine into the exact dirfectory structure as on old machine. Then I copied the folders from old to new, overwriting the new. I had to reinstall several of the add-ons, like Dreamfleet aircraft but it wasn't that big of a deal.HTH,VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg

I did the same thing, and installed FS9 the way it was on the old machine as far as directory. Then add the FS 9.1 patch. Then I copied my aircraft folder, my Bob's scenery folder, and copied the The FS9 texture folder and Scenery add on folder with all the BGLs. Don't forget FS Nav, which is in the FS9 diretory. I also copied the FS9.cfg files and overwrote the default file so I wouldn't have to set everything up again Most of the payware planes had to be reinstalled, and I had to get the codes from the vendors prior to reinstalling. That is the biggest PITA in switching computers, and makes the job twice as time consuming as it would be if all that " are you sure you really own the software you bought?" stuff wasn't a part of it. For one add-on, I had to send 3 emails and waited 4 days to get a reply with the code. I get to do this twice in a about a 2 month period cause my new Dell PC is being replaced by the company due to a Plethora of problems, and should arrive in about 2 weeks.

Thanks for the answers. As almost all of my additional software (scenery, textures, aircraft etc) is saved to cd anyway, I've decided I will do a fresh install of everything. It might take a little longer but it leaves less chance for things to go wrong. It also gives me a chance to get rid of anything that might be in the "Why on earth did I ever dowload that?!" category! :D

Hi!I'm new here today, but I'm willing to offer my suggestions to you. Whenever you've formated your HDD (FS9 on another partition) you can rename your folder to "FS2004.old". Install you FS2004 into the same spot as your previous installation (FS2004). When you're finished with the installation just delete the new directory and then rename "FS2004.old" to FS2004.YOU HAVE TO reinstall certain addons such as PMDG, LDS, Fligh1 addons etc that requires that.Best regards,Rune Barmark

I would still do a full install of the program and then carefully copy a few of the folders in your old setup, to the new. I would also make a backup of the new defaults, so that if your copy doesn't work correctly, you can go back to the default easily.
