WinXp 64bit?

Featured Replies

I've a WinXP 64bit CD here (with activation key), but I don't know whether to installit or not. Many people say there's no speed gain in gaming, some even say it may get worse than using the 32bit version. My PC houses an Athlon64 and a Radeon 9800 Pro on an Asus K8VSEDX board.Today, I read a message where a guy claims to have three times (!) the FPS he had with the "old" WinXP with almost exactly the same hardware I've got! Now, I'm more than uncertain whether a WinXP x64 install would be a benefit for me. I re-installed the OS and FS9 already some weeks ago, and another re-install would mean hunting for the license and activation keys again, let aside the effort to get everything right on place another time...Any experiences yet?Andreas

I'd wait until at least a few people are raving about the 64 bit OP for FS9. I'd also wait until you are confident it works with fully loaded FS9 set ups.Personally, I'd wait until FS10 comes out in about a year from now at a guess?Peter

Here's one person's experiences: http://www.winxpcentral.com/windowsxp/winxp64first.php . As drivers are still be an issue with some peripherals it wouldn't hurt to be sure they are available for all your "stuff". I think, at this point, the dualboot option is the way to go unless you're willing to risk a 32-bit reinstall. Doug

I downloaded all drivers for my hardware (yes, they're all available!) and decided to use a fresh hard drive for testing.Maybe I can do some tests and benchmarks over the weekend (only WInXP, FS9 and the Maddog installed)...I'll keep this thread updated.Andreas

There are several threads about 64 bit in the Hardware forum.

Okay, I end the thread with this conclusion:WinXP x64 runs smooth, and my subjective impression is that FS9 runs at least the same speed as in 32bit mode. The reason why I switched back is that I risk that several add-ons might not function (even such which will appear in the future).Reality XP's gauges don't work because the driver needed for them doesn't install, so WinXP x64 is pretty useless at the moment.I need to wait a long time until applications will be ported to 64bit...Andreas

There is quite a lot of raving going on.That 3 times the fps though he must have an issue with his old installation :).You will find that fps is pretty much the same but you will most probably find that your sim runs smoother which is of course more important then getting the highest fps possible :).But of course compability may be an issue. Then it can be great to dual boot. Then you can go back to Win XP 32 when you really have to. I try to avoid it at all cost because all my games run better on X64. However I have some games that uses Starforce copy protection and those that aren
