July 4, 200520 yr I right now have and A64 FX55, 1GB RAM, 6800 Ultra, and a 200GB 7200 rpm hard drive and was considering buying all Mega Sceneries that are available. Would upgrading to 2GB RAM make a big improvement in the loading of the Mega Sceneries? If flying into an area that is Mega Scenery is there a load time once you hit the boundaries of that area and if so would 2GB RAM get rid of it?
July 4, 200520 yr With the machine that you have... you should not have any problem with Megascenaries. In fact.. Megascenary has better FPS than the default.Yes.. it does take a while before it loads...the first time you start off from a megascenary area.. But even then..with what you have ..it should be fine.I am not sure..if 2 Gig would help that much. Why not just try the Megascenaries ..before spending more money? You may also post your Q at the Mega scenary forum.http://www.pcaviator.com/megascenery/forums/ Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
July 4, 200520 yr Hi GP, since FS with many add-ons hits 8-900MB, I think 2GB is a reasonable step up. However, if you have a Clawhammer CPU, you'll need to get 2x1GB and will not be able to use 4 double-sided 512MB sticks or otherwise the CPU will automatically switch to a lower FSB. For quicker loading times with photo scenery a 10000 rpm drive is of good use. Hope this helps, good luck and kind regards Jaap
July 11, 200520 yr Jaap, saw your post and have aquestion about the 10k drive, does this make a big or small difference in loading and play?? Any thought on good, better, orbest drive?? Seems like we all like to feed the FS monster............
July 11, 200520 yr As said, framerate will be much higher than default (50+ FPS on a systen like yours).Initial loading time when starting within Megascenery will be much higher. You can reduce the loading time with a few tweaks, and if you can live without the Extended Terrain Textures, you can cut loading time to around 1 minute, not much slower than default scenery. If you're flying faster aircraft, FS may not be able to keep up, even on a high-end system, because loading the texture tiles is a function that is not prioritized in the sim. Without E.T.T. and with the correct tweaks applied, about 220-250 kts should be fine, though. Aircraft like the FSD Navajo Panther work just fine with the scenery on my system. When flying into a Megascenery area, there will be no pause or wait. However, it's possible FS won't be able to load the scenery in time and you'll be presented with a blurry mess and have to refresh the scenery.I don't think you should buy all sceneries at once. Photoreal sceneries are not for everyone, some love them, others hate them. Buy one volume first (I recommend Socal or PNW) and see if you like it, then decide if you want the others. -
