November 23, 200520 yr Hi Charlie, I have a 17" LCD (native res 1280x1024) since February and I use it at 1280x1024, 1024x768, and 800x600 for various games and applications. I must say that to my old tired eyes, I don't see much difference. My only problem is a slight flicker in the 3d scenery of FS9 when I'm "flying" a fast jet. I don't see any flicker in NASCAR Racing. I don't own any FPS games so I don't know how they would do. R-

It is connected via an adapter to the DIVD socket on my graphics card. It works in all kinds of resolutions. R-
November 25, 200520 yr Here's my (long winded) story.I purchased a NEC MultiSync LCD 1830 almost 4 years ago. I was attracted by the size (18.3"), viewing angle and display quality. It replaced a 17" CRT. When I fired up FS2002 on it for the first time, I was really impressed. It cost me a bundle, nearly $1300CAN but (I kid you not) my wife insisted I get it.This evening, I brought home a new Samsung SyncMaster 193p. It is only slight bigger (19"), the viewing angle is the same but I think the display quality is a bit better (richer colors). What attracted me to the Samsung is it's contrast ratio... 1000:1. The NEC is 300:1.Contrast ratio is the weakness of LCD displays. The lower contrast ratio units display black is a very dark grey. As the ratio increases, the blacks get "blacker" -- according to what I've read.Soooo, the first thing I did was fire up FS9 in a night environment. What I've read is correct. I fly Martin Shupe's Dash 7 exclusively for the VA I'm in. I fly about 25% at night. With the NEC I could easily read instruments without the panel lights on. With the Samsung, they are not readable without lights. My wife "inherited" the NEC to replace her 17" CRT. She didn't like the "native resolution" of 1280X1024 and set it down to 1024X768. She says it looks just fine to her.My recommendation in making your decision is to give priority to contrast ratio. The next is viewing angle. This, of course, does not take into consideration -- price. I noticed in the store that the units with higher contrast and widest viewing angle tended to be the most expensive. You would have to look at all available units and try to get the best compromise -- but I would give precedence to contrast ratio above all else. Resolution is really not an issue.Lastly, I recommend you check out Samsung thoroughly. In years past their electronic equipment has been "junky" but that is no long true. The store I was at had several Samsung LCD displays with 700:1 contrast ratio at a very decent price. The viewing angle wasn't quite as good as this one but wasn't all that bad.Hope this helps.Cal (CYXX)
