RADEON X800 GTO -- no antialiasing

Featured Replies

Hi,I've set up a new computer with a RADEON X800 GTO 256 MB PCI-E graphics adapter (WinXP SP2, Catalyst 6.1, 17" LCD + 19" CRT). Everything works fine, but I can't enable AA. Regardless whether I try to enable it in FS9 or in the Catalyst Control Center all lines are very jaggy. This doesn't seem to be an alpha-channel problem because the jaggies occur on ground textures as well as at the edges of an a/c. I tried different desktop resolutions and monitor refresh rates, I tried a CRT monitor as well as the LCD display -- nothing helped.I can remember that on my second system an older RADEON 9800 PRO 128 MB AGP showed a similar behavior. But in this case I could solve the problem changing the monitor refresh rate from 85 Hz to 75 Hz. But this doesn't help on my new system :-(Any hint would be highly appreciated. Thanks, ThomasEDIT: Ups, this post should go to the hardware forum, but I accidentally posted it here, sorry.

Yep, this will be heading for the hardware forum soon.First thing I'd recommend is trying another driver tweaker. You might try ATI Tray Tools (Google) to configure the drivers. You might have to remove CCC before any other tweaker would work... dunno, I don't use CCC.Hope this helps,Greg

I have the exact same problem with this card.As a workaround, I found that changing the AA settings before heading into flightsim somehow does the trick. For example, after rebooting and before starting FS, I open the ATI Control Center, enable "Temporal Anti-Aliasing", click "Apply", disable it again (I usually have it disabled, as it isn't too effective at fps below 60), and click "Apply" again. Then FS has perfect AA, and stays that way until I reboot the computer.Of course, I would love a more permanent solution, and have no clue why the gfx card "forgets" it is set to 6xAA when starting FS after a reboot.Regards,Robert

Yeah same thing happens to me sometimes, it happens no matter what driver i use or whatever ATI card. Changing the AA settings or rebooting is the only thing that does it for me.

RobertK and OHN... are you using Catalyst Control Center to tweak the drivers?Greg

Greg: Yes, I am.Regards,Robert

Use ATI Tray Tools, and set-up a 3D profile with your settings saved. Much easier than re-setting/accessing the ATI software. Plus, it will allow you to crank that 'bad boy' up a few notches ;)I also have this issue sometimes, but before I fly I typically 'boot out' of FS (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) to make sure everything is set, turn on my AI Seperation program, recheck my ATI profile, load my flight plan into Active Sky etc., then go back into FS (I always fly 'full screen' and get crazy clitches if I simply go to 'windows mode' with Active Sky, AI Seperation, etc. running)...so it's no big deal, just part of my routine.

Alright, I did some tests.Using ATI Tray Tools WITH the CCC still installed, the AA setting would always revert back to "Application Controlled" after a reboot.Using ATT WITHOUT CCC installed, the AA setting stays at what I set, and AA in FS is alive and kicking. So I guess the solution is found. :)Thanks for all the help.Regards,Robert

Additional note:You don't even have to load ATT with Windows to get that effect.Just start ATT, set your preferences, close it and forget about it.That may be good news for the "who is using my memory?!" concerned among us.Regards,Robert

Glad you got it working....now run some tests and overclock that baby ;)...I run mine (X800GT) at 554, 1080 without a problem.

Hi,thanks for that much responses. I live in Germany, so I couldn't participate the last few hours due to such trivial things like sleeping or working :-)Yes, I know, sometimes it helped to modify a driver setting and I managed it with my new system to get AA working this way, but after some (not the next) reboots I stuck in the same problem and now I can do whatever I would without success. I also used different Catalyst versions without success. This Problem raises some questions to me:1) What's the problem with ATI cards not to recognize AA settings (neither from application nor from driver settings) in general?2) Is there any "special" way o force the card to perform AA? I read something about tweaking the registry in conjunction with other problems.3) Is there a special forum somewhere to discuss this problem? I know (and have seen it once) that the system can perform AA very effectively, so a hardware failure can be ruled out so far. It's driving my crazy :-(Thanks, Thomas

It wasn't mentioned anywhere, but you also need to delete the card reference and the following few lines in the fs9.cfg, then reboot the sim to force it to recognise new drivers, or new card hardware.Check your FS9.cfg to make sure you don't have multiple entries for the card. Mine looks like this:(DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT .0)Mode=1280x1024x32TriLinear=1Obviously yours will refer to the ATI card, but you may find more than one. Allcott

Hi,it seems that removing CCC, installing the driver only and set it up by means of ATI tray tools did the trick. Thanks for the great help!Thomas

>Hi,>it seems that removing CCC, installing the driver only and set>it up by means of ATI tray tools did the trick. >>Thanks for the great help!>>ThomasI use the Omega drivers with my Radeon X800 GTO, and in the documentation, it specifically says not to use CCC with ATI Tray Tools. Use one or the other, since they conflict.Apart from a small config problem (which the author Ray Adams fixed at his support forum - http://forums.guru3d.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=33 ), they work perfectly.
