Share FS on multiple HD ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,we all search for a good way of optimizing our FS installation. One of the bootleneck is the Hard Disk speed and the huge amount of information on FS directories.FS already allows to put scenery directories all among our hard disks (for those that have plenty ;-)Aircraft directory (and surely other) are full of plane and I'll like to put ut on a less loaded hard disk (another S-ATA channel for e.g). Unfortunetly, FS doesn't allow it.I juste found a small tool that allow making hardlink (are you using unix ?) on file but also on directories : http://www.flexhex.com/docs/articles/hard-links.phtmlI do not have tested it yet. Do someone know a tips, a tools, a solution ?VincentRookie Pilot (LFPZ)http://20-100-video.blogspot.com

Vincent,I you read the article it states:"Because all the links must refer to the same MFT entry, you cannot create a hard link on a different drive. Another limitation is that only files can be hard-linked, not directories (however soft links to directories are allowed)." So you cannot place your aircraft directory on another drive.George

Thanks Georges for your reply.I've tested on a non FS PC and was able to make a soft link on test's directories Do you think that moving (for e.g) the AIRCRAFT directory, then creating a softlink (on another) could be faisable ?[...]Reparse points provide another way of creating links. If a file or a directory has a reparse point attached, the system calls a file system filter, indicated by the reparse point tag. The filter may implement any method of accessing the actual data, including quite complicated ones. HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) is a good example how useful reparse points can be. Unfortunately, although we can link to directories using the reparse points mechanism (such links are called junctions), there is no way of linking to files short of writing a custom file system filter driver. Even if using reparse points is a natural way of implementing soft links, the gain is hardly worth the pain. However reparse points are not all that useless for our purpose: junctions can supplement NTFS file-only hard links. Just keep in mind that they are, in fact, soft links, and if you move or delete the referred directory, the junction will point to nowhere. On the other hand, being a soft link, a junction is not limited to objects residing on the same drive; it can point to a directory on a different drive, or even to the drive itself (although a junction is not allowed to point to a mapped network object).[...]I will try ASAP I touch my FS PC.Thanks for your answer.VincentRookie Pilot (France, Saint-Cyr-LFPZ)http://20-100-video.blogspot.com

That's great Vincent. How did you create the link to your aircraft directory? I already have all of my scenery on a separate drive.George

This way the "ln" command is always available from "anywhere".I move the FS2004AIRCRAFT directory in my E: hard drive. Then from a DOS command line (Start menu, Run, cmd) I typed "ln c:fs2004Aircraft e:Aircraft"VincentRookie Pilot (France, Saint-Cyr-LFPZ)http://20-100-video.blogspot.com
