Suggestion on Frame Rate Display/ATI Drivers

Featured Replies

If you would like to have a simple frame rate display on the screen at all times (in MSFS), plus probably a few other thinks you might like with ATI downloaded drivers, I might suggest the following for your consideration:The following pertains to an ATI 9800Pro, but may well work with others:With some of the latest ATI drivers, only the Catalyst Control Center has been offered for setting options (No Catalyst Control Panel Option). Unfortunately, with some of the Catalyst versions on my system the CCC did not work, or at least would not work all of the time. (Yes, I do have NetFramework). Therefore, I opted to use the Omega drivers so that I would have setting options. The latest ATI drivers (6.2) have caused severe spiking of textures for me. On the recommendation of several other posts, I went back to the Catalyst 5.11 version drivers. They do seem to give better response with the 9800Pro. The Catalyst Control Center also works well for me with this version (so far).I feel that I just fell into it, and this is my point regarding the on screen display. The Omega drivers include ATI Tray Tools which I think are kind of neat. Included is a two digit frame rate display in the upper right hand corner of the FS screen.I went through the usual driver routine. Deleted the existing Omega drivers. Went to safe mode. Then (you probably don't need to do this} used Regseeker to remove all ATI, Radeon, Radeon Omega, and Omega items that could be found and removed. Then used Drive cleaner, rebooted and intalled the 5.11 Catalyst Drivers. To my surprise the Control Panel Shortcut for the Omega drivers was still on my desktop. Naturally, it could not find anything, and I removed it.But also still included on my desktop was the ATI Tray tool shortcut originated by the Omega installation, and it does work. Activating the Tray Tools is where the frame display originates, along with the other provisions of this item.I conceed that one might just simply use the Omega drivers, but if you prefer the CCC (which I personally do) this combination works. If this appeals to you, install the Omega drivers, and then remove them (But don't delete the ATI Tray Tool Shortcut and provisions). Install your preferred default ATI Drivers and IMHO you get the best of both worlds. It works for me, and you might like it too.Happy flying:RTH1585368CFI

Google for "Ati tray tools" and you'll find several websites from where you can download the latest version.Catalyst Control Center is utter crap. It slows down all the system.Marco

Hello Marco:Thanks for the information. In reading other posts I realize your opinion is not unique, but I guess I have just been lucky. I have not been able to see any difference in performance with the CCC installed.I kind of like it, but it simply will not initiate on my system with some ATI driver version downloads. So far it has done ok with the 5.11's, but thanks to tray tools I may join you and do away with the CCC.Thanks again:RTH

CCC won't do anything for driver performance. It's just a (bloated) driver tweaker. ATI Tray Tools does just as well (and much more with regard to driver configuration) and uses far less resources. If you're having trouble with the latest versions of drivers (after 5.11) with your 9800Pro use Tray Tools and follow my suggestions in this thread about enabling advanced AF functions and disabling Adaptive AA: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=searchRegards,Greg

Pressing shift plus Z in FS cycles through framerates. I had trouble with 6.1 but 6.2 seems ok with my 9800Pro/256M.Andy

Dumb question about ATI tray tools (I've just started using it in the last week): Does it have to be running (i.e., be showing in the system tray) while FS is running, or do you just run it to apply your preferred tweaks, then close it?

or do you just run it to apply your preferred tweaks, then close it?Yep, that's all it takes. It doesn't need to be running in the background while you're flying.Greg

Andy,Just echoing your experience. I also had a problem with 6.1 and reverted to a previous driver until 6.2 came out and it's fine.Gary Radeon 9800XT 256

Hi.I cannot, for the life of me,figure out how to run my sim without CCC.I run a two monitor setup in stretched mode.Explain,to me,if you can,how do I run the sim like this without it.I've tried.Thanks.
