April 27, 200620 yr Just curious.... Been awhile since I really spent anytime tweaking setting and staring at the fps bit I came across something odd.The higher my vid card settings, the better performance Im getting.Example- Setting my nvidia card to high performance with all the optimizations I was avg 10-12 with everything cranked up. Kinda jerky with some slow reloads.Running KLAX/Simflyers/Asv/FSpassengers/FE/FShotfx/BEV/UT/and a few others. When I turn the nvidia settings to high quality which automatically turns all optimizations off, Im getting 15- 20 or so and alot smoother.Changing traffic settings or the amount of scenery detail and autogen has no effect either way.I have the feeling that turning up the cards settings actually forces the card to to accept responsibilty for more processes and starts to earns its keep so to say resulting in better performance.Any one else have simular results? If you have not its worth trying.BTY- I have 3 computers but the most used is a amd 3400+, 2 gigs, asus a8v delux.Running every fs9 addon there is.
April 27, 200620 yr 6800GTDid some more testing today. Backing off on the cards settings, moving some fs9 sliders to the left has little or no effect on fps. Only looks worse.

April 28, 200620 yr I have a 7800 card. Tried it and it was good. Didn't affect my frames but seemed that the dreaded blurries were more prevalent. I will try it with a GA Aircraft as opposed to a 737 (my default). Seems that the jets fly so fast that terrain doesn't have enough time to refresh. Overall, though....quality was excellent and frames were NOT less when I moved to high quality. Good find.
April 28, 200620 yr It just makes sense that if you INCREASE the vid cards settings and or game graphics/ai ect that you will lose performance. However thats not always seem to be the case.In my situation, increasing graphics quality has no effect and actually slightly improves fps and of course looks better.Which tells me the 6800gt was not being pushed and wanted more thrown at it.Best bet is just to ignore logic and try turning up settings and see what happens. And vary the locations and situations where you test as opposed to just one area.
April 29, 200620 yr Hi,This seems to support what I have been saying from time to time, yet few have believed me - those that posted that is. Some 2 years ago after 'system unification' courtesy of FS-GS, Michael Greenblatt asked me to turn up my Anti-aliasing from x4 to x6. The results took me completely by surprise because while the visuals had improved noticeably I noted that there appeared to be no apparent drop in performance. Needless to say I have checked this out on several occasions since and the results remain the same. Since that time I have never felt the need to reduce this setting :)Of course, where you decide to fly and cloud and AI density will always have a bearing on your fps and the perceived performance which each of us judges as being acceptable.Perhaps this is another system-dependent phenomenon (i.e. the way older ATI cards handle AA and the algorithms employed at each level). Can't comment on the newer cards or nVidia. My current installation (before compression) stands at >45GB and I have never had to reinstall the sim. These facts alone speak volumes for my satisfaction with the sim's general performance. I'm quite sure there are many like me in this respect.BTW, it would be nice to know who I am addressing ;)MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 3.8.205 (6.01) / Catalyst 6.1)(FSAA 4x, AF 16x forced) SB Audigy (5.12.0001.0443), Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 17" TFT LCD 20ms Monitor (1280x1024x32), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 (160GB) + Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 UDMA133 (80 GB) , Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse, WinXP Home (SP2), DirectX 9.0c, AGP Aperture = 128MB
April 30, 200620 yr Mike,You need to update your sig then, as it shows 4X AA, not the 6X AA you say you have set it to.I also run at max AA / AF in FS, on both my desktop and notebook. Sure it drops the max FPS I can achieve, but this reduction only happens when there are excess FPS anyway (ie. high alt, low clouds, over water, etc). In graphically or CPU intense scenarios, my FPS stays virtually the same, whether I have AA / AF off or maxed out, so maxed out it is!I hope FSX takes better advantage of spare video card processing capacity.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
April 30, 200620 yr >Mike,>>You need to update your sig then, as it shows 4X AA, not the>6X AA you say you have set it to.Hi Gary,Oops! I don't know how that happened - lapse in concentration in the wee small hours, I suppose. I added these values as they are not normally present. Kinda like shooting yourself in the foot..LOLIn fact, to be strictly fair, I should have qualified my statement by emphasizing my screen resolution as I believe the higher the resolution the greater the impact higher levels of FSAA will have on performance. I am unable to experiment in this respect as my LCD Monitor's native/highest resolution is as in my sig. I presume that's why Michael persuaded me to try AA 6x as he knew the outcome would be favourable.Cheers!MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 3.8.205 (6.01) / Catalyst 6.1)(AA 6X, AF 16X Forced) , SB Audigy (5.12.0001.0443), Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 17" TFT LCD 20ms Monitor (1280x1024x32), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 (160GB) + Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 UDMA133 (80 GB) , Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse, WinXP Home (SP2), DirectX 9.0c, AGP Aperture = 128MB
