Graphics card upgrade advice

Featured Replies

I currently have a GeForce 6800 GT installed. I still have some frame rate issues and expereience stuttering for a second or two when changing views. I am looking at the new GeForce 7900 GTX as a possible upgrade. Is there that big of a difference between the two?I am the kind of guy who uses add-on aircraft, to fly into add-on airports, while running Acive Sky and Ultimate Traffic too. So, there is a lot going on!I currently have an AMD Athlon 64, 3200+ 2.20 Ghz, with 1MB of RAM.Considering the 7900 is just over $500, I am wondering if it is worth the upgrade? Thanks for your replies.

Hi Rob,I am using your same 6800 GT card and I do not have any stutters when changing views--except maybe a slight delay--fraction of a second--with the PMDG 747-400, and oddly, the Falcon 50 freeware. Otherwise, all other addons and default there is no hint of a pause when changing views. One thing I would do first is contact Michael Greenblatt at FS-GS.com, who made a livelihood out of fine-tuning people's machines for FS. For a fee he will help you set up your PC so that you get the most out of your parts. I have my rig set up for 1600x1200 with 4xAA, 16xAF, and have all sliders full on right. I use plenty of complex scenery and other addons, and have wonderful perf with the 6800GT, plus exquisite image quality. Since we are around the corner from DirectX 10 video cards (maybe early next year) I would seriously hold off getting a 7900 as I don't believe they are DX10 supporting, nor is anything else available now. FSX will eventually utilize DX10, so it might be prudent to wait. I'll bet there is alot more performance left in your current rig, so contact Greenblatt and let him help you get when you should be getting. He will spend hours n hours with you (read about it on his website) and you pay no fees unless you are happy with the results of his setup routine. Noel

At less than $300 now you can get all the same muscle as a gtx in a 7900 GT, just a tad less core and memory speed.

If anything, a new CPU would be better for FS.I had some micro-stuttering when panning in the VC, but when I mistakenly corrupted the HDD and rebuilt the disk (major pain), the annoying stuttering went away. Dont' know what it was but FS runs good now.Would advise you to run Sandra/3Dmark to benchmark and see how your rig compares to others.PatAMD A64 4000+ @ 2.6GHz, Zalman7700Cu cooler, Corsair XMS 1GB DDR, LTK6800GT-OC, Asus A8V MoBo, WDRaptorHDD, TrackIR4, CH FSYoke+TQ+peds, Eclipse RED KB, XP-hsp2
