Cleaning a computer

Featured Replies

I just read the story on the front page about the importance of spring cleaning your computer. I am sure mine needs it, anyone have any tips on the best way to clean the inside of a computer? (I am sure a bucket of water and scrub brush is not the way to go) . ;)

Hi John,Yeah, ain't it cool that hardware made the front page at Avsim! Feels like we've arrived. :-) Those cans of air work well to clean the innards of a computer, although using them could be a bit pricey by the time the deed is done. I use an air compressor to blow all the undesirable stuff away.A vaccuum will work, too. But don't do it on a carpet (static electricity is a possibility). Best to do this on a wood floor (or bench), and even then try to keep the hose safely away from the computer components. In the end I prefer blowing all the crud out of the case.Cheers,Greg

You can also find computer cleaning kits at your local harware shop. They're not too expensive and can be a good help for those hard-to-reach corners :)

Regarding the Vacuum, that'll work but be very carefull with the fans, hold them when sucking the crap out, do not let them turn it can do damage to the rotor/bearings. You probally know that allready, but doesnt hurt getting the warning out again ;)

I've found blowing canned air on fan baldes and radiators doesn't do that great a job. Would like some alternatives for more thorough cleaning.scott s..

I've found the same thing. The dust really gets stuck onto some parts, especially the fan blades. One thing I've had good luck with is a fairly stiff bristle 1/2" artist's brush. I just brush the blades and the fins and then blow off the resulting dust residue with a can of compressed air.Doug
