Oh Oh Something wrong

I was getting ridiculously lousy framerates recently so I decided to experiment with some different video drivers. I'm using ATI drivers and have used Omega drivers as well. (Was flying Tongass Fjords before seeing the frame rate patch. should have waited)So I removed the ATI driver I had using "Remove Programs" and when I attemped to install another Omega driver, I had an error message: "Cannot copy atiicdxx.ini file". After some frustration, I restored my computer to an earlier date. Then I installed the latest driver from ATI without any error messages. Now, when launching FS9, I get the error message : "Video not supported". What am I missing and if I can find it (possibly on the original driver disk) where does it go? Any other associated files go with it?Appreciate the help.Jimp.s. posted this in the general forum as well, so if the admins feel it shouldn't be there, I won't feel hurt if you remove it.

Jim; As I understand it the newer Ati driver packages require MS .netto be installed. They have some earlier drivers...without CCC thatdo not require it. Also Omega's don't require it as his don't use thecontrol center function...which is quite bloated. Establish a restore point...go to Omega's site or driver heavenand get the ati driver cleaner, also download Omega's latest package. Also, you didn't specify what card you have...I'm using a 9600xtand his older drivers work just great.

Thanks Denny. I fixed things by going back a few more days and using System Restore. Then I downloaded the latest ATI driver and removed the CCC program. Got better results, between 17-24 fps but had a crash of FS9 as I was approaching my destination. Screen went black but sound was still on.My card is the Radeon 9200 with 256 mbs. Do you feel that the Omega drivers are better? I tried the latest one but didn't see good results, but that might be to some lurking files still in my system. Which driver seris are you using and what kind of results are you getting? Also, what sceneries are you using? I experienced the fps problem while flying Misty and Tongass Fjords.Jim

Jim; Omega 2.5.51 like I say years old .....but what the hey, if itain't broke don't fix it....Right :-lol If you're getting decent results with Misty using a 9200 cardwell all I can say is:-jumpy you should be doing some celebrating :-beerchug You're giving it quite a workout. I don't have any scenery as such just freeware mesh-landclass-ect. I just picked up an ATI800GTO for 140 bucks and I'll put it inafter my new PSU arrives. You might be running into a heat problem, cause your workin thatcard pretty hard.:-lol

Well I'm not really getting great results, but it is better. Problem is in deciding which card to replace it with, stay with AGP or change MoB and get the new PCI-X card? And which which card in either case?Jim

The popular theory is that nothing is using the full bandwidth of AGP 8x yet, so PCI-e won't actually make anything faster, which is only partly true. For example, a lot of the newer cards are out for PCI-e only, meaning that yes, in most cases, PCI-e cards will be faster, or just better, due to being newer technology. However, there's more to consider. If you get a new motherboard to support PCI-e, that means a new processor to fit, unless you have something like 939 AMD chip that has motherboards with either AGP or PCI-e. Sometimes you will be looking at newer standards of RAM too, which means another purchase, but also means increased performance. So, yeah, the straight up AGP/PCI-e comparison doesn't really show you much when you just compare the speeds of the busses, because neither is being used to full potential. But overall, and especially if you are being forward-thinking, PCI-e can be an element in a larger, greatly enhancing upgrade.
