Over the past few days my once flawless Sony 21" CRT began showing a fuzziness it has never shown before. Also along with this condition the display suddenly blacks out instantaneously, then restarts after making a popping sort of restartup sound. Are these behemoths repairable? The thing was top o the line at .22 grille pitch, perfect geometry and crystal clear IQ. Is there any hope for a repair, or is it time to upgrade? Is it possible the video card is causing this? My display is right at 3y old. Switching to an LCD for gaming and color photography is something I have not been looking forward to as this display has truly spoiled me.What is actually happening when the display goes fuzzy? I notice everying on the display is slightly fuzzy now.Noel

Many of these>have a clock so they die just after their 3 year warranty goes>out the window.Par, where did you come upon that piece of information? This sounds awful! It's too big, too many raw materials, to just throw it away. I don't think I can get Sony to fix it, so it would have to go to some other service department.I will try safe mode n see.Also, I know a lot has been written, but in a nutshell, is there a downside with using 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio for FS9 or FSX? It seems most of the better monitors are running this wide aspect, though this Samsung has caught my eye: SyncMaster 204BNoel

I know what your feeling. I had a beautiful 21" Mitsubishi monitor that started popping then just went black. I called all over town trying to find someone that could repair it. Most shops said that it wasn't worth spending the time to look at because new monitors were so cheap. I wanted to get it fixed because it had great image quality and throwing it out seemed too wasteful. I finally found a place to look at it but they couldn't fix it because Mitsubishi wouldn't sell them the parts. I called Mitsubishi and they said that I would have to mail the monitor back to them to get it repaired but they wouldn't guarantee that they could fix it. The friggin' thing weighed 75 lbs without the box.I ended up taking it to a computer parts recycler that also sold used computer equipment. I bought 3 used Dell 21" monitors for $45 a piece and they recycled my dead Mitsubishi for free. I'm buying all my monitors from these guys from now on. Just a thought, if you can't get yours fixed either.Good Luck,Ted

Good ideas Ted. This display was Sony's flagship a few years ago, with a hefty $1,700 price tag, and it does pain me to see the whole thing tossed or even recycled because of a few (presumably) parts. I think I need to do some additional troubleshooting because now the image has become clear again. I think tomorrow I will take it, all 75 lbs of it, outside and blow it clean, or try to, with compressed air. As well with the inside of my PC including the video card. Maybe there is a little part that is getting overheated. I know when I first turn the monitor on now it is crystal clear, then seems to suddenly get fuzzy.
