Will Vista and directx 10 require more processing power?

Featured Replies

I was thinking about buying a new computer the moment FSX comes out. Now I'm wondering if I should wait till Vista comes out and directx 10. I believe I read somewhere in this forum that Microsoft will be releasing an update to FSX that will take advantage of Vista and directx 10. Will that mean a computer that will now run FSX at 20 fps consistently might bog down running FSX after the update that takes advantage of Vista and directx 10 is installed? In that case, I think it would be better to wait. Anyone?Ferris

Most game developers including Microsoft uses the new DX 10 cards and Vista to give you more eyecandy. So it will not run games faster however they will look better without that much of a performance hit if you have a DX 10 video card that is.You may have seen conceptual screen shots on how they think the DX 10 version of FSX will look. You do need a dx 10 video card to make use of the extra features. Vista emulates dx 9 and eats more RAM so running dx 9 games in Vista may indead be slower then in XP...Really hard choice if you can wait to see the initial benchmarks of dx 10 video cards and vista before deciding. Otherwise I recon Vista we already know is very expensive and I don

That's what I plan to do. I'm going to get a new computer before the end of the year with at least 3 gigs of Ram, and as much processing power as I can get. I fully expect to trade out the video card, that is sell it to someone else, as soon as an NVidia DX10 card becomes available.

I can see some things in DX10 that _might_ lead to better performance, but I suspect the card makers will offer different performance at different price points, just like now. Clock speed, number of piplines, graphics RAM will still differentiate.I am playing around with FSX demo in Vista RC1. Right now with the default slider settings I am getting around 30 fps, though with some stutters (subjectively, about the same as FS9 on win XP for me). Here is the Vista "performance index" for my system:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/156241.jpgFSX says it requires a score of 3.0, with 5.0 considered "optimum". I haven't tried bumping up my AGP apature to see if that would boost my score.scott s..
