September 11, 200619 yr Hi,According to you, what is the best driver for an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ? I've been using the last official Catalyst but I think that the Control Center uses a lot of system performance.Regards,;-)Damien - LFQQ.http://damiendelille.free.fr/Cliparts/Avion.gif Damien.
September 13, 200619 yr I spent days testing every ATI driver and finally settled on 5.12 driver as best balance of visual quality and performance on my system.I've been meaning to try some of the Omega drivers, but haven't got to it yet.Dale Dale
September 14, 200619 yr Dale, I've got a similar system to yours and am using the ATI 6.14 drivers. Would I notice a difference moving to 5.12? I know that's a loaded question, but am just wondering if different versions of the driver make that big a difference. Thx!billg

I>know that's a loaded question, but am just wondering if>different versions of the driver make that big a difference.>Thx!>>billg>Hi Bill,I was having some problems with some of the 6+ drivers causing some textures to blur or look coarse, plus I didn't like the later ATI utility for setting options, which seemed to use a lot of memory on my system. To answer your question, I doubt if you will see an fps difference between 5.12 and the 6.14. You may see a difference in texture quality and overall smoothness, but I think this will vary with individual machines. My recommendation is to go ahead and try it - be sure to set a restore point so you can easily return to your current configuration. Use a driver cleaner to get rid of the old driver bits.I finally set up a test flight to compare drivers. I used the DF Bonanza and approach to SEA, because those seem to be hardest on my frame rates. I set AI to 0 and used default weather, Summertime and 12:00 noon. I noted the high, low and avg fps during the approach, but I also took notes on texture and color quality and overall smoothness. I seem to remember trying 8 different drivers before I settled on 5.12.Dale Dale
September 14, 200619 yr Dale, thanks much for the reply. I'll give it a go as texture quality and smoothness are my main priorities. Well, we all want more fps but there's only so much you can do. :-)Thanks again.billg
September 16, 200619 yr I have been using Omega drivers for close to 2 years now and just tried to upgrade to the latest version. For whatever reason Win XP would not start and I ended up having to uninstall the drivers and install the latest ATI drivers. WOW! what a difference in my machines performance. Not sure why but I am very happy right now. LDS767 as smooth as ever.Mark. Mark CYYZ
