September 13, 200619 yr Ok. Accepted. It is a very very bad bad standard and thingy. But that does not necesarily mean they have to destroy ones update plans the hard way. No doubt more and more people will migrate to USB but I think the customer base is still big enough to justify some efforts. So longEd
September 14, 200619 yr I think game port was killed in Win XP Pro X64 version. It's always a question of how long you continue to suuport obsolete standard. While the hardware using that standard may be, for you at least, state of the art, or current art, that doesn't mean that the interface is. I can see many reasons why trying to support a bridge from directInput / HID class to an analog port is difficult and holding back the OS.scott s..
September 14, 200619 yr I think it was a fair question. It is a good joystick and I would be ###### too if my operating system no longer supported it. But there are some good arguments as to why it is no longer supported. If someone had just posted the arguments the post would be finished but somehow somebody's grandfather and steam engines and old cars got dragged into it. A simple explanation that the hardware interface is old and clunky and that most people don't use it anymore would have done just fine, but I guess some of us are bored and like to amuse themselves by rubbing other people's nose in the dirt. billg

November 5, 200619 yr wow this was pretty amusing...got some good laffs out of the banter...but i do feel for u Ed.....tw i got a sidewinder precision 2 sittin right in front of me and it's usb...
November 5, 200619 yr Indeed. Some 8/9 years ago I purchased that same piece of robustness... #### of a fun I had with it. I even used it to drive cars and hovers. But mostly it was the feeling of touching a plane down that I really liked. Then I upgraded to XP, half of the games down the toilet but then still it was FS2000 and FS2002 that really matters. It would recognize it but no more customizing Forces and being able to use the "shift" button to duplicate available buttons, before I almost did everything with it... back to keyboard "reality" again. At least FS would let me configure sensivities and all in-game. 6 years on and that piece was still shining. 150EUR I paid for it at the time. It was a very good long term investment. And that really means something here in the 1-euro-a-day-income part of the globe. No matter what, you really have to resist consumerism and avoid marketing cues. Last month I was really having some fun with StarWars Gallaxies... Puff! #### foe left me with the stick hanging from the sturdy base. Same day I found myself buying a new joystick dogfighting wise, waiting for FSX... pretty contradictory things really are. I was really urged to this terrible decision, in fact I really want to do some heavy jet piloting now, I need that Yoke instead...Morale: At least I had a good reason to get a new joystick. But never rush your decisions. And finally nevermind your interest, "marketplace" always presents you the choices you have:1) Update your software2) Upgrade your computer3) Update your software4) ...You're entitled to choose the order! :DregardsPedroPS: choose wisely! ;)
November 6, 200619 yr Ed, Microsoft DID manufacture a USB version of the Sidewinder FF Pro, which happens to be the joystick I use when my CH Yoke is not a realistic option. As far as I can tell, it is mechanically identical to the gameport version, and very solidly constructed. You might hunt around a bit to see if you can still find one on the market. That way, you can be modernistically obsolescent... or obsoletely modern. Choose wisely. ;-)
