October 19, 200619 yr Hi all. This may help someone who is thinking of a GPU upgrade For FSX.All readings taken with single cards not in SLI.Old System spec.Asus A8N32SLI / [email protected] / XFX7800gt Extreme 450mhz clock 256mb memory.FSX loaded on WD Rapter 10,000rpm.2gb Corsair XMX3200C2PT timed @3-8-4-4- 3D mark 05 score 7370.New SystemAs above but with a new 7900gtx 512mb memory clocked @650mhz 3D mark 05 score 9893.Result in FSX.All file as out of the box,all setting to MID exept veh/boats/lesure craft @10% These FPS readings were all at London Heathrow.Taxi around the air port.with 7800=FPS between 9 and 12With the 7900=FPS between 10 and 13.Stationary at runway 9 7800=FPS between 11 and 147900=FPS 13 and 15 (DP rounded up)All the best.Rex
October 19, 200619 yr I'm not sure what you were expecting, but going from a 7800 to a 7900 is not that big of an upgrade in terms of raw speed in fs.But, the extra memory on the new card should make more difference in the texture loading. But that won't really help fps that much. You're definitely better off with the 512 meg card, because texture loading is very important for overall fluidity of the sim.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
October 20, 200619 yr My two (acutally 529.00 then 389.00) dollars,Had evga 7800GT Copper @ 500/1.15ghz With minor autogen cfg tweak was getting about 19-23. (KSEA)Downloaded Memstat 2.5 which tells you your sys & vid memory usage & peak. As the 7800 was only a 256mb card, memory was shown 100% usage. Wanted a 512MB card so ..Bought the 7900 GTX 512, gained 1-1/2 - 2 frames per second. The interesting thing is that memstat said the peak memory usage was only 149mb. This probally was the major reason I had unbelievable blurries, which I did not have on the 7800.Took card back replaced it with 7950 GT KO 512. Exact same performance as 7800GT Copper but same 149mb memory issue and blurries as 7900GTX?Put 7800 back in, no more blurries, 256mb maxed out at 100%.I am still working on it .... can't figure out why with the 512 cards FSX wont use more than the 149mb. Two bad cards of different series - I doubt it.For the Record, Vidcard Stability Test Bechmarks of the 3 cards were:7900GTX - 2318, 7950GTKO - 2128, 7800GT Co - 1914. Big spread difference in 3dMark05 from 13,081 to 8018. But definatly not in FSX.So I'm going to run the 7800GT until the DX10 cards come out, AND down. Not even going to think about spending 700+ for 3-4fps in FSX.Regards'GarettAMDX24800(@2.75), A8N-Sli Deluxe, 2G Muskin Black XP4000 (3-4-3-8 @ 500mhx) 2X WD120JD SATA 7200 Raid 0, with getting to be worn out PCI-E slots ....
October 20, 200619 yr Wow that's amazing Garett. Does anyone else report this behavior with 512mb cards?RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

October 23, 200619 yr Hi allThe Reson For my change was for the Memory upgrade. But the results of my system with most settings at 50% a few at more and some at less is very good,I still need to do a few more tweeks.I am going to move to 64bit with Vista,I hope by then most hardware supplyers will have got their drivers out.I think 4gb of Memory will help a bit more,But FSX is good dont you think,or will be this time next year.Best regards,Rex
