Custum Built PC - Good/Bad?

Featured Replies

I've been putting a parts list together for a new PC. I want a PC that can run FS9 to the extreme and FSX decently. Here is what I have so far:CaseAPEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Casehttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16811144151MoboGIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R LGA 775 Intel G33 Micro ATX Intel Motherboardhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16813128053Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6750http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16819115029Power SupplyCORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W Power Supplyhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16817139002Video Card EVGA 512-P2-N773-AR GeForce 8600GTS 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Cardhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16814130286RAM CORSAIR 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 Ghttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820145184HDD Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16822148262Soundcard SIIG IC-510012 5.1 Channels PCI Interface SoundWave 5.1 PCI Surround Sound Cardhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16829270002CPU CoolerCOOLER MASTER RR-CCH-L9U1-GP 92mm Hyper TX2 CPU CoolerCould you guys look and make sure that everything is compatible with each other and that it'll be a decent performer? I'm horrible at picking parts out but pretty good at putting computers together. The price stands at about $1300 right now, but any cost saving measures would be greatly appreciated. Here is my Newegg wishlist if you would like to see it: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishli...tNumber=5703611

Ya only got an 8X multiplier on that CPU. That's not a problem, if you give yourself some ram headroom. You're gonna need to get to a 450Mhz FSB for a full 3.6 O/C. That Corsair will explode at a FSB of 401mhz. All they have is a NaMe and ram that'll run at rated speed. Save yourself $60 and get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220227This stuff will handle a 500mhz+ FSB.Nice choice on the HD. This one's a real sleeper. This is actually a Seagate -11 HD. It has a single 250GB platter and can sustain Xfers of 100MB/sec+. Guys are raid 0'ing three of these for 300MB/Sec xfer rates. FSX is going to larger/fewer files. The day of the Raptor is about over. Dump the sound card. Use "onboard."Get the Thermalright Ultma 90 cooler: http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3068 Do you want onboard video? If not: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813127030 Or wait 2 more weeks and get an X38.Can you get OEM XP Op system?

Don't know 'bout that Mobo. Haven't seen any reviews. Let us know.Might save a couple of more bucks with one of these PSs. Again, Corsair is more about "Brand Name."http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817341001or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817256012 Both of these are top-notch PSs. Its interesting to note that the big components (CPUs,Vcards) are Reducing their power requirements. The next gen (Intel Penryn/ Nvidia G92) will need significantly Less power than the current gen Core2/8800/2900. 600 watts will be plenty, now and into the future. Unless you are planning to SLI/Crossfire current gen Vcards, either one of these will provide your system with a solid foundation. Consider a "placeholder" Vcard until a permanent solution comes along: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130085This will provide (only) Un-noticably less performance than that $200/GTS.It's still up-in-the-air, but Nvidia may have a significant Vcard upgrade available in 8 weeks (Google "G92"). The 8600GTS will waste a major portion of that CPU's potential. Any 8600 is a total mismatch for Any C2D CPU. It'd be a shame to waste ANY $$$ on a Vcard right now. All this $$$ you are saving right now could help you pay for an appropriate Vcard that will fully utilize that CPU. either consider an 8800 right now, or get a "placeholder" and wait 8 weeks for a (possible?) 3X the performance over a current 8800 . . .for the same price. Also, just spend another $75 on a Q6600 and have this upgrading "ebay-the-old, research-the-new" nonsense over with for 3+ years. Personally, its gonna be great fun to have my interest thoroughly diverted (to that new PMDG MD-11?) for a throughly extended period. http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A1938452

The Corsair HX Series CMPSU-620HX 620W Power Supply is a fine power supply...not sure what you mean when you say: Corsair is more about "Brand Name." Read the many reviews on it or ask someone that has one. I do. Craig

Looks pretty good, a few things...1) Either go onboard sound or get a nice card like the Creative X-Fi, don't get a cheap add in card, onboard snd is actually darn good these days, I just liked my X-fi over my A8n32's sound2) For the RAM if you want to OC either go Mushkin or Patriot. I use Corsair but I'm not OCing at all...and when I did, the RAM did alright, but not as well as some others can do3) Video card - Why not go really cheap like 7600 etc? Don't waste the money on an 8600 for a temporary card....either go and get the 8800GTS 640mb or wait for the 9800 to come out. Here's a 7600 for cheap: (75 after rebate)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E168141300624) PSU - 600w at least is what I'd get....OCZ is good, Corsair, Asus whatever....IMHO they all work, just be sure to read some reviews on them..ie Google :)5) CPU cooler, I like the Zalman 9700...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118019some don't oh well, get what you want....Arctic Freezer 7 Pro works too I think....???http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835186134Good luck, and have fun building it!!!!

Corsair did manage to contract an excellent PS. The only gripe I have is they priced (their name) significantly beyond other equally excellent PSs. Why spend more for a truly fine PS when you can spend less for a truly fine PS? The best CPU cooler right now is the Thermalright Ultra 120. Their "Ultma 90" is just a good and ~ $30 less. Once again, why spend more for a truly fine . . . http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3068
