DX10, DX10.1: what or when to buy?

Featured Replies

I built a new rig in January, but skimped on the video card. My plan was to wait until DX10 stabilized. Are we any closer to that? Is this fall a better time to buy than last fall? I know that FSX will be updated sometime this season for DX10, and won't require DX10.1. But whatever I buy, I'm going to be stuck with it for a few years. What would you do?

I still don't think we really know if the first DX10 cards really work well with DX10 let alone how DX10.1 will work out.I would wait for November when the new nVidia cards come out. Either they will be wonderful & a must buy & they will effectively reduce the price of the current cards. You can't really loose either way unless you need that new card now.Chris

DX10.1 is a incremental update so DX10 hardware will function fine but not support features added to DX10.1When the DX10.1 cards come out they are going to be expensive and the DX10 cards are going to drop drastically in price. Either way atm the moment I would wait. When the new cards come out if you have the funds, update to the latest and greatest otherwise there will be some good bargains to be had.

First, you were smart not to jump on the 1st gen of DX10 hardware. We're gonna need a triple from even the 88s to make DX10 work well. Here's the latest: http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=c...=3197&Itemid=51http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=c...=3245&Itemid=34The web-wibble has been going nuts about this. There are conflicting reports, one after the other. All we might guess is that Nvidia is releasing something in November. We'll just have to wait and see. Set your news alerts to G92, G90 and D8E.

What direction is the vid card scene going? One of the benefits of shrinking manufacturing processes is to reduce power requirements and heat, and of course put more on the die.Instead we will have a 65 nm part that, according to these reports, will possibly require even more extra power than present 8800 cards. Imagine 2 4-pinners coming into it.Half a person's case will be video card.I just think all of this is so overkill for FS guys. We don't need externally-powered one-bazillion pixel-pushing video cards. We need cpu power. The problem is, if the D8E is what we will need for good texture management, then we will have to shell out for it. And we'll never use even half of that video card's power.I guess if I buy a D8E, I am going to have to take up first person shooters. bleh how tame and predictable those are.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

We need software that'll use what we already have sittin' in da socket.
