Graphics cards: Memory vs. clock speed

Featured Replies

Hello everyoneAccording to Tom's Hardware, an 8800GTS with 320MB but a higher clock speed performs better than a regular 8800 GTS with 640MB on most games. Now, what is the expected behaviour on FSX? Do we really need 640MB of video memory? I am going to buy a new graphics card soon, and need to choose between a regular 8800 GTS with 640MB or a factory overclocked one with just 320MB. For most games, I understand the 320 choice is better unless I plan on using very high resolutions (which I don't, nothing above 1280x1024 for now). But what about FSX? any idea? Thanks

Graphics card memory usage also depends on what AA/AF levels you use. If you are happy to use the in-game AA/AF (which is pretty good IMO), then 320MB memory will be sufficient at 1280x1024.Gary

While I don't know for sure...the general consensus here tends to be toward more video RAM.....ie get the 640mb 8800 versionbut don't get the 8800GTX....that's overkill for FSX

Yes, the GTX is overkill the drivers really suck so you're not pushing the card to the max. I currently have the 8800GTS 640mb and I can't be happier. If you're flying on a large LCD then go with a 640mb, if you're flying on like a 19" LCD then go with the 320mb. And like what was already posted, the GTX is overkill for FSX and beyond overkill for FS9. I'm not updating cards until NVIDIA releases the next line up of DX10 cards.

Using the 8800 GTS with 320Mb RAM I found that changing the resolution made no noticeable performance difference, upto my maximum resolution of 1920x1200. So my guess is that once you've got 320Mb RAM, you've got enough for FSX.However, it is a little early to tell whether the shift to DX10 will impose greater or lesser demands on video RAM.Tim Morshead
