October 17, 200718 yr I'm now looking to build a new computer, but I've gotten lost in all the new stuff on the market..... So, I'm asking for suggestions on what motherboard/ram/etc. to get for best results....I'm looking for the best, most overclockable system based on either the Core2Extreme QX6850 or Core2Extreme X6800 (depending on whether the dual-core or quad-core is the best bet)... Don't know yet if I'd want 2GB or 4GB of ram....Any recommendations on what motherboard and RAM to get for the best overclockability/performance? Also, would I be better with the Geforce 8800GTX or Ultra, or the ATI equivelant (or is there an ATI equivelant to the 8800GTX/Ultra?)(Edit to subscribe to this topic..) October 20, 200718 yr Since no one has responded to you I will give my 1 cents worth:CPU. You say you want the most overclockable system, so in that case I would recommend a dual-core. However keep in mind that people are getting their quads to overclock ALMOST as well as the duals. I expect as we move forward in 2008 the quad will become the high-end cpu of choice...something to consider if you plan to keep the system for say, 2 or 3 years.RAM, people report good results with the Patriot ram. OCZ has worked well for me, too. You will have to spend a little more money to get the most overclockable ram.If you get 4 gb of ram, I would get that in 2 sticks as opposed to 4.MOTHERBOARD: Again, in general you will have to spend a little more money if you want a motherboard that overclocks well. But you probably already know that. Right now in the Intel world there is the X38 chipset, which is new. It is expected to be superceded fairly quickly by the X48 chipset, due out in a month or two, but there are rumors that the X48 won't see the light of day.The P35 chipset is the workhorse chipset right now, and there are a number of good motherboards out there for overclocking...DFI makes one, and ASUS. Can't remember the model names.Over the last few years, if overclockability is your #1 goal, then a DFI motherboard often has the most overclocking tweak options of any boards out there.POWER SUPPLY. Don't forget that there is more to overclockability in a build than just motherboard, cpu, and ram. You didn't mention p/s so I assume you have something pretty stable and solid there.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
