October 23, 200718 yr I was just reading the latest and greatest 'best buy' feature on video cards on Tom's Hardware. On comparing one high-end card to another and also in the mid-range, the author alluded to the fact that most cards don't process AA beyond the 4x setting, so it's not a big deal that you'd want a card that could be 'used' at the 6X setting on your 3D driver screen. To put it up to the 6X seems to not give you anything past what would be seen at the 4X slider setting. If I understand what he meant, is that there is a wall at the 4X setting that is not breached by any card?!?!? Is 6X truly a placebo setting? I dunno....Any I.T. video gurus out there, that would agree or debunk that statement or understanding??I myself do not know if in fact putting your setting to 6X vs. 4X will render your scene any better. You'd thinks so, huh? I must admit that at the 4X setting, it is so close as to be the same rendering on my system. Maybe it's true?Anybody care to comment upon this?Mitch
October 23, 200718 yr I think the article was speaking more in terms of the fact that 4x vs 6x AA appearance-wise is pretty close to the same to the eye. Perhaps that is what they meant.Probably they meant that you would need to compare side-by-side screenshots to notice a difference. ??You must have an ATI card, from the way you talk...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
October 24, 200718 yr Author Yep, I do, an X1950 Pro 256 part. You know..I did do that 4x and 6x test on my own system, and to be truthful, really did NOT see much of a diff. I had been running with 6X, but have now gone down to 4X. Perhaps with my running at 1920x1200, it becomes redundant.Interesting....lol.Cheers,Mitch
October 24, 200718 yr You know, nvidia cards don't have 6x AA as an option. They might with a tweaker like RivaTuner, but not by default. Unless the 8-series do. But historically, 6x is ATI/AMD only.I figure if it's not even offered, it must not make much difference.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
