Should I upgrade my CPU?

Featured Replies

My GigaByte board is probably going to be replaced under warranty since the on-board sound will not work. I had been planning on trying to overclock my Intel Core2 Duo E6400 (never done this before but I am told I have a good CPU and mbo for this) but should I maybe take this opportunity to upgrade my E6400 CPU to a more powerful Duo Core or possibly a Quad core? From what I

I'm not really familiar with that 6400, but I do know the E8400 overclocks very well....

I don't think the 965G DS3 will take an E8400 unfortunately.Having had the same CPU and similar motherboard as you, and now having upgraded to a quad core, I don't think it was worth the upgrade overall. My E6400 ran at up to 3.4GHz at a push (3.2GHz was its sweet spot, being at stock voltage), whereas my Q6600 runs only slightly faster at 3.5GHz. In terms of FPS, I get about 10% more than I did with my E6400 @ 3.2GHz, and with 4 cores versus 2 the overall gaming experience is smoother with quicker scenery texture loading, but it honestly wasn't that bad before the upgrade.I'd recommend trying to overclock what you have first. If you can get to 3.2GHz or greater then I wouldn't bother with the quad core upgrade.Gary

Hi Ryan and MarkThx for your responses; I have just had my mbo checked and it is AOK so the situation doesn't arise for upgrading my CPU; so now I will move towards trying an overclock.Mark I still have hard copy dated Novemeber 17, 2007 you posted for me on overclocking and I will bite the bullet shortly and try itregardsNigel
