Widescreen VS normal

Featured Replies

HiI currently have 2 monitors, CRT's and want to replace them with TFT's, 2 identical ones.So here the question:Is widescreen 16:9 better or worse than 4:3 ? what is your opinion??It looks like with widescreen the view is even wider, but will distort the 2D panel, and I HOPE it works well on the widescreen in VC mode. Can some one confirm this?Should I buy 2 19 inch 4:3 ones or 2 19 inch 16:9 ones? Please suggestions.JohanA LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, AND A LITTLE MORE ACTION PLEASE..http://www.jdserver.mine.nu/johan

As of now I don't have any real experience with an LCD so maybe I am doing something wrong. It seems like none of them have the graphics quality of a good CRT. The view in FSX is really big/wide; for the most part it's pretty good. I am using 1680x1050x32bit@60hz (16:10) in Desktop and FSX. It's the native resolution and you pretty much have to use it. This LG has a utility program call forteManager and I am trying to figure out how to use it. There is a way to set up a 'find window', but I can't figure it out yet. I was able to improve the text displayed and it's very clear now. I am using Anolog mode because I have to get a Digital DVI cable. I don't know if the Digital cable will make any difference.I will say that Bioshock is absolutely awesome on this monitor. As far as the 2D panels in FSX they are only stretched a little bit. Not enough to make ya krazy.I just might get another one. lololI have been trying to get some help here --> http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum...4e03397d0680be6

>Ok, any reason why it would be different in FS9?>>>Johan>>A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, AND A LITTLE MORE ACTION PLEASE..>http://www.jdserver.mine.nu/johanI don't have FS9 currently installed. I would assume the same results. But hey ya never know. I think the stretching might be affected more by the size/shape of the 2d panel bmps. Of course you know you could alter them using Adobe or MSPaint.I am going to install FS9 onto my other computer and I will try the LG LCD on it.Is there a store where you are that would let you return an item if you don't like it? If so just try it out. Make sure you get the correct dvi cable. If you get the cable type that handles both digital and analog signals then you can try both modes in Windows.

Johan-I'm not sure if this answers your question but fwiw-I have a 17 LCD (4:3) mated to two 19 CRTs in a triple monitor/triple views arrangement. With a bit of colour balancing, you can't distinguish any difference. The size difference is compensated by zooming the LCD to 1.06- the ratio of the diagonal measurements. This is an older pic- the LCD bezel now partly overlaps the CRT bezel to reduce the separation. Works just fine with the outer mon angled toward the pilot so that the surfaces of the mons more or less intersect. I've also placed a thin cardboard cover strip over the bezels which hides/blends them quite nicely.Alex ReidLining up R28R KSFOhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/186957.jpg

Nice setup.I have two CRT's here myself, but one is 17" and the other 19"Will replace them, but..widescreen ratio 16:9, will be more horizontally then verticaly so I am afraid that an chunk of the panel will be cut off and more panning is needed. Is this correct?I see on your pic no distortion, but its 4:3 like mine..Returning to store, dunno.. can ask of course, but best is to know on forehand. They often need to order it here.JohanA LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, AND A LITTLE MORE ACTION PLEASE..http://www.jdserver.mine.nu/johan

Johan- I believe that on a wide monitor, the main 2D panel will be stretched sideways to simply fill the screen- but the gauges will be ovalized. Some simmers say it doesn't bother them. Jim Cooper suggests that with a wide screen, just drag the side of the 2D main panel to reduce its width and keep gauges round. This will leave a piece of unused desktop for a popup such as CDU or throttle. My choice would be to keep your 19 CRT and add (two) wide screen LCDs on either side for views LFwd & RFwd. Below these views, you can display all the popups- sized to your wishes! (Overhead and COM popups tend to be FPS hogs- I only display as needed.)As I mentioned, by angling the outer LCD mons toward you, those bezels can partly overlap the CRT bezel, if the planes (surfaces)of the mons approx intersect. The combined bezel width would be approx same as two LCDs side by side. You can correct for bezel widths in Panel Config, and so synchronize the views/horizon in roll and pitch. Also set height of the views to synch with main view- and twist the views to set the horizons level after angling the outer mons! Not difficult. Finally, there is nothing to beat a 48" wide horizon! Anything less is tunnel vision. Alex Reid
