April 11, 200818 yr Bought a new computer a few months ago and thought I had all the bells and whistles I'd need for FSX.2.20 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo64 kilobyte primary memory cache2048 kilobyte secondary memory cacheWindows Vista Home Premium3070 Megabytes Installed MemoryRadeon X1300/X1550 Series [Display adapter]Radeon X1300/X1550 Series Secondary [Display adapter]DELL SE198WFP [Monitor]Problem is that for some dumb reason I bought the "narrow" case Dell Inspirion. What that means is that there are very few (and no real good) graphics cards that will fit.Is there such a thing as an "external" graphics card or some way I can boost my grapphics capability without trashing my whole system?
April 11, 200818 yr No external graphics card that would help for FSX.Also, your CPU is not really up to FSX.If FSX is key, you would be best to sell the system, or use elsewhere as other than for FSX its a nice computer.FSX works best with a 3.0 Ghz + CPU and a 8800 GTS video card at a minimum. April 12, 200818 yr Author Thanks for the reply. Actually I'm not unhappy with the results I'm getting now but think I could push things even further with a better system. Guess I better do some better research next time.Best,
April 12, 200818 yr Moderator Hi Jeff,In your shoes I would be inclined to keep that PC and once you have a new all-singing, all-dancing one, network them and run all your FS-related software on the slower machine via WideFS.That frees up all the resources for FSX and will make for a smoother sim.I never regretted moving to a two PC system.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). April 12, 200818 yr Author Thanks, Ray. Is there any way I can use my "old" 750mhz, 528mb RAM, computer for everything else and the new system for FSX? About the only thing I do with the system is browse the Internet and use FSX. The old system is perfectly good for the Internet and I could use the new system for FSX.Just wondering...Thanks,
April 12, 200818 yr Moderator Hi Jeff,If it has XP and the mobo has a network connection then the job of linking them is eased quite a bit. I'm no network expert but if you have a wireless (or wired) modem router both machines can be plugged into that and each will have internet access and the ability to access files on the other machine. Some details of that old 750MHz machine will help. If it doesn't have a network connection you can install a network card to achieve the same end.Once they're talking to each other then WideFS (from Pete Dowson) completes the FS side and will allow you to run your FS programs (RC, ASX etc) on the old PC. April 12, 200818 yr Author Might be worthwhile giving it a try, Ray. Do you know of anywhere that has a sort of "step-by-step" guide to setting up a 2 machine system? Although I'd probably use the 750 machine for everything OTHER than FSX it does have a better graphics card. Both machines do have network cards and I have a wireless router. Thanks for all your help.
April 12, 200818 yr Moderator Google is my friend in situations like this. I did a quick search and found this. http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_home_network.htmWith network cards and a wireless router the rest should be a doddle! :-) Ray (Cheshire, England).
