Startup problems

Featured Replies

Just purchased a new computer a couple of weeks ago and have a problem booting up XP.Some times it will boot up ok then maybe about 1 in 10 bootups it will hang on a totally black screen just after the press del to enter setup page appears.XP loading page doesnt appear and have to restart the computer and it loads up fine. Dont get ant POST errors and have no problem getting into BIOS or safe mode. After that dont get any problems using the computer at all.checked device manager and everything ok there.Took back to where i bought it from and they reinstalled XP and the problem was still there, took back again and they replaced the SATA cables and reset the BIOS but still getting the problem.COntacted them again and they have ordered a new motherboard which should be replaced sometime next week.Hopefully that will fix it cause this is very frustating specially the fact that once you get XP to load there are no problems at all.Havent had the best after sales service, the usual case of once theyve got your money and dont have replacement parts in stock! At the moment i have the system set to S3 sleep mode as it seems to boot up ok from sleep mode.Any one else had this problem and what did you do to fix it?Any info RegardsRichardMy systemBiostar TP35D2 MotherboardIntel Dual core 2.3 processorSparkle Geforce 8500GT Graphics 1Gig memory2GBDDR 2 memory1 300gig sata hard drive1 200gig sata hard drive720 watt PSUSATA DVD-RW8 channel soundWindows XP home SP3

Hi Richard,I experienced the same problem for months (while searching for a solution). The speculation out there on forums as to the cause is considerable - as indeed was my mounting sense of frustration. Eventually I found the solution for me. But not before needlessly swapping out my 4Gb Crucial Ballistix RAM and RMA-ing my Asus P5K Deluxe WiFi mobo. All new kit. Neither were faulty. But in the meantime I installed a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P, which ironically booted fine for the first week or so, but then would NEVER boot. BTW, another great board. The problem all along was my PSU, an OCZ 680W Extreme Series. What foxed me was that when it DID boot the system ran screamingly well under max FSX load for hours on end. So how could it be the PSU, right? A tester confirmed the voltages were all within tolerances but it found an unexpected error. Sorry, I don't recall the parameter that showed up as faulty. As a last resort I found a local dealer who had a 600w Portuguese-made PSU for 53 euros!! (I live in Spain). I fitted it and presto all the boot probs disappeared totally and have never returned. I sent the PSU back to OCZ even though it was now just over 12 months old. Let me tell you, OCZ are up there with the best of them in terms of customer service. They were FANTASTIC. In no time at all a brand new OCZ 900w arrived by courier and has been running brilliantly in my machine ever since. A classy PSU and a classy company IMHO. I hope this might be of help. Don't be fooled if your new mobo seems to solve the problem. Give it time to burn in. Whatever, good luck with it.
