November 6, 200817 yr I have a QX9650 on a Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 in an Antec 900 case. Any recommendations on a good cooler/fan to eventually clock at 4.0? The stock cooler/fan works pretty good at 3.0 and even when I brought it up (incorrectly I think) to 3.6 the temps idled at 35 and never exceeded 50c with FS9. The HS needs to be quiet and fit and I would prefer not to remove the MB for installation. Thanks,Michael
November 7, 200817 yr Hi:I use a Thermaltake V1. It keeps my 3.0 gig at almost room temp.RegardsRick Rick Case Avsim Library Administrator AVSIM.COM
November 7, 200817 yr Commercial Member Thermalright is a good choice, especially the ultra 120 extreme. You will need to purchase an extra 120mm fan as it comes without one. You can also add a second 120mm fan for a push-pull config. The noise levels will depend on the fans you purchase (check out Noctua for some of the best ultra quiet, but expensive, fans)The best overall CPU cooler is arguably the Noctua NH-U12P - not the absolute best in terms of cooling though it is way up there. Thing is that it is very, very quiet. Also includes a free i7 socket attachment so you can use it on next gen hardware when the time comes. The NH-U12P is also a lot smaller than the ultra 120 if size is an issue.Removing the MB for installation is pretty much par for the course with these high end coolers - no real way around this.Check out frostytech.com for a lot more info.Konrad Konrad
November 8, 200817 yr The SunbeamTech Core Contact FreezerIt comes with Tuniq TX-2 thermal compound and a 120MM fanI just purchased one of these and I am happy with the results. If you are unfamiliar with the name Google it and read the reviews as it has been matched with the Xigmatec, Thermalright and other well known brandshttp://www.sunbeamtech.com/index-2.html
November 8, 200817 yr I'll second that Sunbeam. It is an amazing cooler that is only $30 dollars shipped from NewEgg. I just put in on a 125W X2 and the idle went from 42C to 20C - not a misprint. Load temps are even better. And thats with fan on low.Watch your fingers. The fins are very sharp. I used a stubby needle nose to put the clip on. Also make sure that you have at least 155mm from the top of the cpu to the side of your case. And no finned memory. This cooler pretty much covers the first slot.
