Disc cloning is it a good idea

Featured Replies

I now have everything (Win FS addons) installed on a Seagate 250 Gb IDE HD. I also now have purchased a WD Raptor 150 Gb HD. So of course I wan't to move everything to it. One option I know of is to use a program for disc cloning. I have found one called hdclone. I would need to pay 20 Euro since I intend to move to a smaller drive than the source. The whole point would be to save me a lot of work by not needing to reinstall everything.Does any body have any experience of this software? Does it work in practice? Is it simple and straightforward? Then it might be worth the money.

I would highly recommend that you do have a backup solution, either cloning or imaging, at the disk or file level, to backup or clone your disks. Outside of copying files, it is reasonably easy for a file to be corrupted or hardware to fail at the least convenient moment - and you do want to think about the safety of your data, especially an install as complex as flight simulator, plus related extras.I've used several products from Symantec (Norton Ghost), Acronis TrueImage professional, and one from EMC's insignia line (Retrospect) that came with one of my external Western Digital disks.I finally went with Paragon drive backup 9, which does both regular file backups as well as full disk images and is very price competitive for the features compared to other offerings.http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-personal/This choice is working for me, yet I would recommend that you download the demo version of all the packages from the major vendors Acronis, Symantec and Paragon, and see which one of those you like best for your system. Most come with a 30 day trial period, no questions asked. I also encourage you to torture the software as much as possible during your evaluation, and at least go through a disaster recovery scenario (do a small recovery if you can) to see how the recovery functions - it is not so easy with some packages. In your case, you also have different size hard disks, which may present a challenge with some of the above offerings, especially if you angle on the partition level backup. The bottom line is you need to be able to copy or recover your data, and the tool should make you confortable, and be strong where it matters. Some of the packages have a lot of features you won't need in a home environment.A last note on cloning file locations: the registry entries or configuration files will likely point to known path on the original install location. One trick you can use if you have NTFS partitions is to mount the other disk as a folder on the first disk instead of using it as a drive letter. This way, you can gain extra space, yet not have to worry about install path, or folder names - they are the same, and no new drive letter enters the equation. Good luck,Etienne MartinAVSIM Staff Reviewer
