QX9650 Extreme & ASUS Maximus Formula BIOS settings

Featured Replies

Hello All,Well, I watched the other posts on these subjects and even added one of my own . . .much to my dismay, after posting I went and looked at MY BIOS and found that I was running default -- Puter flashed BIOS screen, wife didn't know what it was and hit default. My big problem is I had it OC'd really well to 3.76 and it was perfect for my uses. Where I wrote it down it is no longer around....so, my memory is NOT so good so I need a little help....I think JK and a few others have gone through this recently, so please...I'll make a print out this time and paste it to the caseLOL. My present settings now are:Ai Overclock ManualCPU Ratio Setting 9FSB Freq 400FSB strap to NB 400PCIE Freq 100DRAM Freq DDR2 1066DRAM C Rate AUTODRAM Timing Control AUTODRAM Static REad control AutoAi Clock Twister ModerateTransaction Booster AutoCPU Voltage 1.3CPU PLL Voltage 1.5NB Voltage 1.49DRAM voltage 2.12FSB Termination Voltage 1.3SB voltage Auto Everything listed below this in the bios is on AUTO.I am presently running at 3.62 and would like to get above 3.8. All temps are very cool. I set most of these numbers from reading the posts on the last thread about this chip.....help guys! PS I run FS9 and FSX in Windows XP Pro running 4g DDR2 1066 Ram and a raptor HD with a 1100 watt HD. Cooling is NOT a problem at all. Vid card is a GTS8800.Best and thanks in advanceClayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. Dopke (Clay)Major, USAF (retired)"Drac"

Clay -I'm assuming tat you are stable at these settings.Increase FSB to 420 or 430 - that will give you 3.78 or 3.87If it's stable - go fly - if not - I'd kick up the NB a tad and try again. Of course if you want to go higher - add a few points to the FSB and try again. Watch your memory settings - you might have to change straps to keep it in line. You might look at this for reference to settings, max voltages, etc:http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya...?num=1225569427also visit here:http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board...SLanguage=en-usShould be really easy with that setup. Also, that mobo has the ability to remember your preferred profile - when you get one you like, go into the bios and save it.Good luck VicQ9650 E0 CPU 3.0 o/c 4.06Asus Rampage Extreme X48 4G XP2-18200 DDR3 1800FSB Mushkin 996587 RAM 8-8-8-24-1T1-74G Raptor - XP System1-74G Raptor - Data1-320G 7200 - Programs 1-150G Raptor - FSX 1-500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx XG 174.74 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyHannsG 28" 1920x1200Viewsonic 22" 1680x1050http://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg

Vic,Thanks alot for your reply. I found a thread on the ASUS board for OC'ing the 9650 on my board up to 4.1, I'll try the 3.8 setting first and if that works and the temps are right, I'll stay there as that is my goal -- to get back close to where I was before the wife hit the defaults, LOLThanks againClayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. I use the same processor on a ASUS p35 p5k deluxe board.I run it at 400x10, for me the secret was to turn load line calibration on, despite some sites suggesting against it.With it on, I can run at 4GHz 1.3275 volts, I also found improvements by replacing my older Ballistix 2.1 volt ram with some that runs at 1.8v.The only changes I made:FSB 400Mult 10CPU 1.3275vRam 1:1 1600 1.8v at spec timingsLoad Line ONWith a 280 FSX on V32 or XP is smooth as could be.You should be able to save your settings to a cfg file in case this happens again...

You're welcome, Clay. I thought you'd get more out of the threads than my cutting and pasting various portions. BTW, I agree with the comment re having Load Line Calibration enabled - I have it on.Have a Happy Thanksgiving!VicQ9650 E0 CPU 3.0 o/c 4.06Asus Rampage Extreme X48 4G XP2-18200 DDR3 1800FSB Mushkin 996587 RAM 8-8-8-24-1T1-74G Raptor - XP System1-74G Raptor - Data1-320G 7200 - Programs 1-150G Raptor - FSX 1-500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx XG 174.74 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyHannsG 28" 1920x1200Viewsonic 22" 1680x1050http://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg

I remember my first O/C attempt on the P35/Q6600 setup. I had O/C'ing web site recommendations all printed out and ready to go. Those folks are computer hobbiest and tweaked every setting available. I was thinking, "I'm going from 2.4 to 3.6. It's gonna need the 'tweaking works'." I set up the bios with every setting re-set to these recommendations . . . and it wouldn't even boot. After trial and error, (mostly error), I found that simply resetting the FSB and the CPU Vcore was all it took. The system wasn't 'out on the edge' at all and perfectly happy to run at 400 x 9 = 3.6 . . . without Any esoteric, system De-stabalizing tweaking. The Penryns will go to 4.0 with the same ease. Their limiting factor is the FSB. With low multiplier Ps, the FSB will start to lose-it before the CPU. That's Intel's plan, anyway. I did find my bios wasn't perfect, though. Sometimes, it would not autoset my ram to 800Mhz. Various bios versions would not set Vcore according to my bios set. I then became suspicious of Otto in general. Now I manually set memory clock and volts, PCI clock, and carefully check Vcore and droop. It seems that actual Vcore is always low and some bios Vs allow more Vdroop than others. Low Vcore will really de-stabalize an O/C.Point being, resetting the FSB and setting (and controlling) Vcore is all that's needed. The rest just needs to stay at their "auto" settings. It's just that sometimes Otto needs a helping hand.

Hello All, First and formost, thanks for the quick replies -- I've now got it dialed in at 3.8 and it was stable enough to run FSX for two hours with the MD 11, (PMDG) with no crash and very good frame rates. So, tonight I will PRIME it for load and see how that turns out. It's really very simple when you get down to it, however with all the possible changes, one has to have a starting point. Oh, and I wrote the BIOS down and it resides inside the case now . . . won't get lost there. Thanks again, Best,Clayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. Try:OCCTIntel BurnTest(Google these for download)Note: run Intel BurnTest *only* if you have a superior cooling solution. Also, monitor your temperatures while running. If CPU temp exceeds 80 degrees C, stop the test.

IMHO, OCCT and Memtest86 are the way to go.Q9650 E0 CPU 3.0 o/c 4.06Asus Rampage Extreme X48 4G XP2-18200 DDR3 1800FSB Mushkin 996587 RAM 8-8-8-24-1T1-74G Raptor - XP System1-74G Raptor - Data1-320G 7200 - Programs 1-150G Raptor - FSX 1-500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx XG 174.74 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyHannsG 28" 1920x1200Viewsonic 22" 1680x1050http://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg
