March 5, 200818 yr Hello All, Today I editited the paint of the right vertical stablizer on an Air Tahiti Nui Repaint repaint for Wilco's Volume II Airbus series (repaint is found on their website). I did the edit with the default Paint program and saved my work. After loading the aircraft on flight sim 2004, the whole right side of the aircraft was blank (the texture that i edited). I'm really new at painting and am realy hoping someone can help me out!Dylan
March 5, 200818 yr Incorrect file-format.Files need to be converted to DXT-format prior to use in FS9/FSX.The file you edited probably is/was a 32 bit 888 file. These files can be edited in a paintprogram but simply saving them in your paintprogram makes them 24bit (standard 16 milj color BMP), wich is a file-format FS does not accept for the exterior model-textures.Check out DXTBmp http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htmANDVisit this site for excellent instructionshttp://members.lycos.co.uk/mcwdainow (Tutorials)Leen de Jager
March 6, 200818 yr Actually, problem not yet solved. After running it through DXTBmp the texture I edited was perfect. After doing some test flights, I went to the exterior view to find it to be extremely blurry. Does anyone know what's causing this to happen?Dylan
March 6, 200818 yr I assume you`ve read he tutorial by Morgan Dainow.Where he explains how to convert your normal (24bit)BMP to a DXT the hint about unchecking the mipmapping is missing. This are the steps to do:1 Save a copy op your ( already saved !!!) PSD or PSP file as a normal BMP (Windows) wich is actually 24 bit.(NOT 32 Bit!)2 Open this file in DXTBmp and save this file to a DXT3 (low quality/256 colors) or 32-888 BMP (real colors but filesize four times as big as the DXT3.Make sure the option MipMaps Include when saving is Unchecked.http://www.dutchfs.com/crew/leen/antwoord/vink.pngNiet aanvinken = UncheckLeenPS:Morgan please add a hint about the Mips in your tutorial. Then, I hope AND expect, this question about blurry textures will not be asked much more in future.
March 6, 200818 yr In fact Morgan did mention the Mip box , but not when he was talking about saving to DXT the first time in his tutorial.Leen
March 6, 200818 yr Are you talking about the Complete Repaint Walkthrough section on getting the scheme in to flight sim or the stand alone "Converting bmps" one?On a side note, I've actually completed all the images (and the scheme) for the Complete Repaint Walkthrough.. just trying to get the time to finish typing up the final bits :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 6, 200818 yr Hi Morgan,The Complete Walktrough>Creating the structure Part2.2>Getting her into Flight Sim , thats the place were I am missing the warning about the Mips. You`re also stating at this chapter <> I may be mistaken but I think thats a little glitch.I think normal Windows/BMP files are 24 bit.A DTX 32-888 is 32 bit.24 bit for the texture and 8 bit for the alpha. Please do not see this all as comments.I love your tutorial , I think it`s the best tutorial about painting for MSFS there is.Best regardsLeen
March 6, 200818 yr Hey Leen :) I do agree it needs rewording and the addition of the Mips issue, its been soo long ago since I've done that I can't even remember typing it! I'll add it to the things I need to change when I "filter" the walkthrough, if you or anyone spots any other things feel free to point them out :)I'm also going to add a section about properly converting it in Part 4 "Final check flight" after the proper alpha channel is made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 10, 200818 yr Leen,When reading the Help file on DXTbmp program menus.I get confused when it is correct to place checkmark inside this "include when saving" box?Author said MSFS does use this "MipMaps".When saving a file using DXTbmp, you have to go to "Save Extended Bitmap" to get to "save as type" DXT3.Is DXT3 when saving repaints an extended format?See attached jpgs of what I was reading.>I assume you`ve read he tutorial by Morgan Dainow.>Where he explains how to convert your normal (24bit)BMP to a>DXT the hint about unchecking the mipmapping is missing.>>This are the steps to do:>>1 Save a copy op your ( already saved !!!) March 10, 200818 yr >>>>>>>>>>>>>I get confused when it is correct to place checkmark inside this "include when saving" box?Author said MSFS does use this "MipMaps".MSFS "can" use the mips, MSFS does "not need" the mips.Texturequality (shown in MSFS) of files saved without mips is defenetely much better.DXT3 is an extended bitmap format yes.32bit-888 is an extended bitmapfile with 16milj colors , bigger but much better quality ( DXT3 is 256 clrs)Leen
March 11, 200818 yr Leen,Thank you for the explanation. Now I understand why I had truoble understanding the authors help information.I put your explanation in my repaint file folder.Slowly but surely, I am making progress with repainting.I am now using Morgan's repaint tutorial with Corel Paint Shop Pro and PaintDotNet.I am currently at the point of trying to overlay fuselage texture onto aircraft photo image for alignment. Repainting is much more work and learning than first meets the eye! Thanks again ... much appreciated. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
April 29, 200818 yr Hello All, I hate to bring up this old topic but I'm having another problem with this repaint fix! The side I fixed with paint and resaved with the program is darker than the unedited side. Does anyone know what I can do now? Thanks!Dylan
April 30, 200818 yr Have you got an alpha channel on one side? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
