Trouble with VFR flight - KRNO to KSAC

Featured Replies

KRNOFMGSIGNAKSACBasically when I take off from KRNO I want to turn to Mustang VOR (FMG) so I can circle climb to gain adequate altitude before progressing on my flight over the mountains. However, VOX ATC will completely disregaurd my FMG waypoint and start vectoring towards the mountains. I guess I should file IFR (SID/STAR) when flying in mountainous terrain when using VOX ATC?

>I guess I should file IFR>(SID/STAR) when flying in mountainous terrain when using VOX>ATC? Yes, it is necessary to file a SID in these cases as VoxATC in its present form doesn't have terrain awareness or programmed departures routes for airports. Without a filed SID VoxATC will use a standard protocol to vector you out of an airport traffic area which on some departures can lead to trouble. It's easy to program though. In fact you can just pick a name for your SID and name the navaid you want to fly to and VoxATC will take care of the rest. You can program a SID only, a STAR only, or a SID and STAR for your flightplan and it's easy to do.Hope this helps,Zane
