STAR to ILS Transition

Recommended Posts

Guest DocW

Now this is a general question, not necessarily related to fs2crew, but the ATR tutorial flight raised the issue. Since FS2crew has the best support, I will dare to post if here first.Everything works out now in the ATR FS2crew addition, the only point that is not smooth is the change from RNAV/FMS-controlled flight to capturing the ILS.What is the proper real world procedure ? I searched for a comprehensive description but failed. As I understand it, the STAR is the assembly of final legs leading to your final approach. But when I wait till the FMS has reached its last leg, most times I am to close to the airport to catch the GS (and the LOC).What is the point where the pilot is expected to change the autopilot from LNAV (FMS controlled) flight to APP. Can you look it up in the terminal charts? Perhaps it is the Transition method selectable in the STARS page of the FMS?Sorry for the long question, but it is one of the last mysteries for me.

Hello Michael,I don't think there is a specific, absolute point; it's really your discretion. A lot of STARS end with vectors or you get vectored off the STAR, so you have to go off LNAV anyway. There are a couple guys who fly ATR's on the Flight1 ATR forum. I might suggest asking them what they do.Cheers,Bryan
