Not showing snow where it should be?

FS9Ultimate TerrainFS Genisis MeshGround EnviromentActive Sky 6.5 weatherWhen i fly out of KHMT (area where i live) and fly to Big Bear City (L-79) There should be snow all over the mountains, but, there is not? I can stand in my back yard and see the snow there but when i fly into L-79 there is none? Am i missing something? or is there some conflict with my scenery preventing it from happening?Thanks,

snow coverage is a hard coded texture change in the sim via time and season settings and longtitude. weather settings and addons make no difference to this.Glenn

There are 12 season "maps" in the sim. Each map is effctive from about the 19th to the 19th of the next month. These maps determine where snow (AKA "hard winter" ) will be shown in the terrain. The resolution of these maps in FS9 is only 10km by 10km. As a result, it can be difficult to depict snow in mountainous areas where the snow level is, say, 6,000 ft. the area covered is often less than can be depicted by the season map. I uploaded a revised season file a while back. In general, it has more snow than the default, but just checking Big Bear (L35) there is no snow in this location. My file was derived from the US national snow and ice center data, which has 4 km resolution, downsampled to 10km.Note that the seasons file in FSX has better resolution (2.4km) so it might be more feasible to fix it in FSX.scott s..

Thanks for the replies......I just figuring the real weather would tell the sim that there is snow there and place the tiles. We had a freak snow fall here and it got down to 1500 feet so the whole mountain range in the valley looks awsome and in the distance i can see Big Bear covered with snow and was kinda bumbed when i flew there that there was none. Thanks for the explanation.

I've though some about the problem of depicting snow as a result of real weather. In fact, I started woring on my replacement file after the blizzard hit the east coast of the US in Feb 06, and of course most of the terrain didn't show the snow cover.The US data I referred to above provides coverage of the entire northern hemisphere on a daily basis, but it is uploaded about 2-3 days after the data of observation. I was thinking it was feasible to compile a new file for every day, and have some selection logic in a module that would load the appropriate scenery file prior to starting FS. The problem is you would have to know the desired date prior to starting FS9 (I think maybe FSX is better in that regard) and of course, you couldn't do it in real time.The idea of using real time weather observations as a means of predicting snow cover might work, but it seems like a massive undertaking.scott s..
