Hello, First thanks to the guys all working so hard on getting our favorite site back online. It will be totally up and running fully before we know it. Thanks again. I have a quick question. Does anyone know of a executive type 4-engine jet during the Jetstar, Saberliner era and also was about same size and style and also resembled the DC-8 and the Convair 880. I believe I've seen it in either USAF or NASA markings. I just can't seem to find or remember what kind of aircraft it was. Any feed-back would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks again, S.

If it isn't the L-1329/C-140 JetStar, which had four engines, looks a little biit like the DC-8 in the cockpit area, and was used by both NASA and the USAF, then I'm fairly puzzled.Al

There was a build off between Lockheed and Douglas of two relatively small aircraft to be a new jet transport trainer for the Air Force I believe. The specs called for four engines so pilots could get accustomed to that many levers and such while not costing as much to operate as most military transports. The Douglas prototype had the engines mounted on the wings. Douglas believed that made their prototype fly much more like the bigger transports and thought it would be an edge, however the JetStar was selected over it as the new Air Force trainer for transport pilots. The prototype with the engines on the wings lived on as the Douglas Company's executive transport. Only one was ever built. It looked just like a small scale DC-8...The Jetstar went on to be a much more numerous executive jet, eventually a twin engine one.Robert Alley

Hey guys, Thanks for your help, but i figured out the plane I was thinking of. It was the McDonnell Douglas MD-119/220. The way I understand it, it was in the running for VIP jet. but lost out to jetstar or saberliner. I've seen were Mike Stone made one. Well I hope that sometime someone does a very detailed version even payware. cause I'd buy it. Here's a pic. of the MD220. Thanks again. S.

Sorry about both pics. must have bumped the button twice.

Yes, I know it's McDonnell. NOT McDonnell Douglas.

The McDonald 119/220 you picture did exist and lost the military competition to the Jetstar. Back in the '70s after college, I used to fly charters into Albuquerque, NM. Back behind the Cutter Aviation ramp to the northwest was where the 119 prototype sat for years. My understanding was that at some point the owner wrangled a ferry permit to move it to Phoenix. I also understand that it was an embarrasment to McDonald Douglas and that MD spent bookoo buckaroos trying to get legal custody of the bird so as to destroy it. Personally, I always thought it a beautiful looking B1RD!

Happy landings,
