May 30, 200917 yr Hi Everyone,I am thinking of getting this bundle deal..Intel Core I7 920 D0 Stepping Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 -SLBEJ-ASUS P6T X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 3PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI CrossFire SLI SATA2 GBLAN MotherboardOCZ Gold OCZ3G1866LV6GK 6GB DDR3 3X2G DDR3-1866 PC3-15000 CL10-10-10-28 Triple Channel Memory Kit does anyone have opinions on this ram,this will be a fsx only pc with future parts being wd640black,300gb raptor and some 285 video card.Thanks for any help,Tony
May 30, 200917 yr Author Hi,i guess i am wondering about the cl 10 10 10 28,and the corsair link you gave has them lower.i do want to overclock and want to make sure i have the right ram to do it.Thanks for the help,Tony.
May 30, 200917 yr unlike most things in computing, lower numbers are better in this case as they refer to the access time of the RAM
May 30, 200917 yr unlike most things in computing, lower numbers are better in this case as they refer to the access time of the RAMCAS latency 10 at 1866 MHz is crap timing. Fast would be 7-7-7, good would be 8-8-8, and 9-9-9 is low end consumer stuff at that speed. CAS 10 is probably some DIMMs made from lower speed chips with *really* slack timings to be sold in OEM systems to people that don't know better. I've never seen retail CAS 10 memory, and don't know who would buy it if they did sell it.Also, be aware that only the RETAIL boxed 920 CPUs can run memory faster than 1066MHz without overclocking the entire chip via BCLK. The OEM chips have the multipliers locked...the retail boxed ones do not. With an OEM CPU you'd have to push BCLK up a whopping 75% from 133 to 233 to get the memory controller up to 1866MHz. May 31, 200917 yr Author That is good info, glad i did not get it,maybe that is why it was part of a bundle deal. Thanks to techguymax and bob,Tony.
May 31, 200917 yr Tony if you have a MicroCenter nearby I suggest you purchase your CPU there, as they offer the lowest CPU prices around in their stores, and they only sell retail boxed CPUs. Their everyday price on the 920 has been $229 since its release, and they even had a sale at $199 a couple weeks back, ostensibly to clear out the old C0 stock to make way for the new D0 chips.
May 31, 200917 yr OCZ Gold OCZ3G1866LV6GK 6GB DDR3 3X2G DDR3-1866 PC3-15000 CL10-10-10-28 Triple Channel Memory KitNo, its not good RAM (due to timing) for high perf FSX useDDR3 1600 3x2GB Either: 7 timinghttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227381or for best @ 1600, this6 timinghttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820226052orhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820226061IF you intend to try for DDR3 2000 (1866 is not worth the difference from 1600) then you need to pony up for the Corsair memory at CAS 8-8-8 and DO be advised, without a EXTREME PROC it may not be possible to get the full 2000 out of it as it will depend on your clocking ability.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145237if you dont know what you are doing with clocks STAY OUT of the DDR3 2000 product and stick with DDR3 1600 low latency.. MAXIMUM of 7-7-7 timing.. lower memory timing is ALWAYS better
June 1, 200917 yr Author techguymax, thanks for the micocenter info but i live on the other side of the border, wish i could get one for those prices but the cheapest i can find one in canada is$352.i guess the ddr3 1600 with the lower latencey is the way to go,i should have known that after reading all the posts here, thanks for the info nick.Tony.
