FSX memory use in WinXP

Featured Replies

I have a question regarding the downloading of the 3GB EXE patch utility. When I did a search for my FSX root directory to make a back-up of it I got the following: FSX.EXE-05F37CFC.pfFSXROOT_FSXI'm using the CD version of the MD-11 so I was wondering which one of the above is the FSX root directory? The software site of ntcore.com states: "tool patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms." Since I am running WinXP on a 32 bit platform, can I use this software to run this patch utility and will it work on my system. Has anyone done this fix and if so, can you run it by me as to what steps you took?Regards, jack

Before you use this tool, you need to change your boot.ini to enable Windows to use 4GB of RAM. You need Windows XP with SP2 or later to do this.It should look like this:[boot loader]timeout=0default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /PAE /3GBThis will enable Windows to assign 3 GB to a single process instead of 2 GB. This is of course an improvememt, but its still better to use a 64 bit system.

I would strongly recommend doing the following:[boot loader]timeout=30default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional with 3Gb switch enabled" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2560Why? This gives you the option of booting into your system without the switch enabled. Could save you a lot of time and hassle if for some reason your computer cannot cope with the /3Gb switch...If you are having issues with the /3Gb system not starting, you may need to tweak the /Userva=2560 setting... 2560 = 2.5Gb and allows a max. of 2.5Gb for an application, namely FS9/X in this case...By the way, according to the following page: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platf...PAE/PAEdrv.mspxyou do not need to add the /PAE (physical address extension) switch as you have the /noexecute=optin there, assuming of course your system has hardware-enforced DEP (data execution prevention) enabled... I believe this is the case with all recent Intel CPUs... cannot speak for the AMD products...The default timeout setting of 30 seconds will give you enough time to choose which set up to boot...Do a search on simforums for information on setting up your computer for the /3Gb switch... look for NickN as a useername...Andrew
