FSX not working - last resort

Featured Replies

Well I get the ever-dreaded (and present, so it seems) "FSX can't load some files...etc." message after installing any of the SP's or Acceleration. By itself the program works. This started about a year ago, and I couldn't find a reason for it. I hadn't installed anything recently, etc. Some people have reported success with rebooting and then playing, but that doesn't work for me. I've searched exhaustively through a myriad of forums for maybe that last little something that I haven't tried, and gone step by step through Microsoft's procedure for removal. For now, even though the registry and any and all subfolders that I could find are gone, when I put the install disc in the program still recognizes that it's on the computer. I'm running Vista 32 by the way....I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times over the last few months, but I have FS9 installed and working flawlessly so I usually just give up after trying so much and making absolutely 0 progress. This program worked wonderfully (with acceleration) for about a year and I'm tired of staring at $100 worth of software that has no current value. My first question then would be: Where on earth might I find these "secret files" or whatever they are that are telling the install CD that FSX is still there? If I can at least get that far I'm hoping the rest will fall into place. To recap - there are no FSX folders. The one under user data is gone as well. All registry entries have been removed. Flight1's177 cardinal was the only installed addon and has been removed. Additionally, I did an advanced search for any file with "fsx" in it and deleted everything. I'm not sure what else to look for. Thanks for your time! :)

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Run it, select FSX from the installed products list and remove. After that is completed, try and reinstall FSX. You can get the utility here: Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup UtilityRegards,Bob Modrowski

well I tried that, and thanks because it did enable me to get a clean install. FSX works fine by itself again, but same issue when I try to load accel. I suppose I could reformat the drive, but it seems ridiculous to have to go through all that. maybe the accel disc is bad? even though it's only been used 4 times? There has to be a way to find out which files are bad and/or missing I'm sure..........thanks for being so vague, aces. One other little strange thing, and it did this even when the whole installation worked, was that it never installed a shortcut on the desktop, or in the start menu. I had to go to the folder itself...

Could you please post the exact error you receive when trying to install Acceleration so that one of us may be able to get that working for you also?--Bob

Sorry if I led on that accel doesn't install - I have no issues with installation and everything goes as it should - I get problems the second I try to run the patched or upgraded FSX.The error message is the same whether I have installed sp1, sp1 + accel, or accel by itself. Again I did a bunch of tests today with the RTM program and it works fine, but I would like to use both my processors. the message I get is " flight simulator was unable to load some program files and will now exit. Please reinstall Flight Simulator to restore or repair the program installation." Is this possibly a dependent program issue? I read somewhere else that anything FS needs should be installed from the original discs......Thanks!

Several things to try - turn OFF UACbe SURE you install Accel as Administratorwhen you run FSX after the install(s) - try Run As ADminanother thing to try, a PITA I know but - if you have the space - copy the entire Accel CD to your HD and install from there. If there are any errors during the copy, you might have a bad CD, but I doubt that.My guess is some admin rights issue, possibly why it doesn't show up in the program files. I don't run Vista any longer but IIRC it puts FSX under Microsoft Games in the Program Files menu.HTH,Vic

ok, I'll look. I know UAC is off. it reminds me of that everytime windows starts. It doesn't even put it under program files in the start menu, unlike fs9 so who knows. I'll check it out though thanks.
