Freeware 3d exterior models to encourage more repaints?

Featured Replies

I've noticed that there are quite a lot of great quality 3rd party repaints for freeware aircraft e.g. POSKY when compared to repaints of payware aircraft, so i'm just curious... :( Would it be feasible for payware aircraft companies like PMDG to release their exterior 3D models (without VC) as freeware, and provide a paint kit to encourage more 3rd party repaints?

If your after repaints go on Flightsim where my repaints are available until avsim gets backup , If you download my latest for FSX there are new bump files .Lee Marrow

My point is if more people have access to the exterior 3d model then more people would be able create repaints, quality would go up and the guys who paid would benefit from higher quality repaints.POSKY has some amazing repaints, many of them better than the payware ones IMO.

They use photo-real or pictures . Personally i dont think you can get much higher in quality than the paints i have done as the closer you get the quality does not diminish unlike in freeware . There is a paintkit available on PMDGs website . I cant see how the model could be made freeware as it would have to include the flight dynamics and so on . I guess that is for PMDG to answer and not me . Also the higher the quality the less framerates .Lee Marrow

If you have the paint kit and a screenshot of the thing, you can usually do a repaint, although there would be no way to check it without the model, but it shouldn't really prevent someone from doing a repaint if they really have the desire to do so.Handing out a free model would doubtless encourage some painters, but I suspect it would encourage far more people to simply say 'cheers' for a free model and do a panel merge from something else to get a freebie aeroplane, that is unless it was made 'inert' in some way. It's an interesting idea, but I suspect it probably won't happen.Al

I'm not a fan of this idea. Half of my $80 went towards the model, and I don't see how it would be fair to let it go for free.

I don't really see the point of painting a model you can't fly either. I think most painters paint liveries for planes they will be using :)

It's just a curiosity that's all. I brought the 744X and the MD-11 because of systems simulation rather than for the looks. I was thinking about a 'gimped' model with no VC and little advanced animations e.g. on par with the POSKY/iFDG stuff that is out there, maybe make it a demo or something.
