FSX SCENERY LAYERING

Featured Replies

It's a mesh issue. Runways in FSX (and previous versions of Flight Simulator) have to be one elevation from end to end. Most real world airports aren't that way...one end of the runway is at a different elevation than the other end. The way a default FSX airport gets around this problem is by "fudging" the elevations of the surrounding terrain the runways and airports sit on. In essence, FSX makes the entire airport all the same elevation so the "flat" runway can sit on it. As soon as you install a third-party terrain mesh product that uses more realistic elevation data, FSX then creates a "cliff" at one end of the airport boundary...the place where the elevation of the flat runway and surrounding same elevation airport "ground" ends, and the higher or lower elevation of the ground immediately outside the airport boundary begins. There are fixes for these airports, but they are in the form of special airport elevation fixes or AFCAD type files that include more accurate elevations for not only the airport but the surrounding areas outside the airport boundaries. Justin's FS Genesis Terrain Mesh SHOULD have these fixes included with his most current terrain mesh packages. Have you gone to the FS Genesis website and downloaded the new Version 2 files for his terrain mesh? They include the fixes and instructions on how to install them (or they might actually be part of the new files...I don't remember right now). In any case, with Justin's most current Terrain Mesh packages, you shouldn't be seeing those "cliffs" around the airports anymore.Note some other higher resolution terrain mesh products are available, and they also suffer from the "cliff" problems, and will continue to do so until the authors of those products include fixes for them.As an aside, see the below thread in the Tutorials forum here if you want some more in-depth tutorials on Scenery Library management in FSX. I wrote a few tutorials that were both posted here on AVSIM and another flight sim site. The link below takes you to one I wrote here on AVSIM. Links to the others are in the below tutorial thread here on AVSIM. http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?autocom...&article=20Rick

Thanks,You are right about it being a mesh thing. The "World & USA Extreme Landscapes" which I bought from PC Aciator was made by FS Genesis and it is an Abacus product. While looking on their site & forum, I saw few references to this problem at this location. I decided to rename FSGdem0101_us.bgl to FSGdem0101_us.bak. This corrected the problem but I am concerned about what other areas have suffered because this file no longer in use. The World & USA Extreme Landscapes is supposeidly V2. I don't believe I can download any files from FS Genesis because I did not purchase from their site. I have however, written to Abacus asking about any updates to this package I have. You have confirmed my suspicion and now I believe, I will have to wait and hear from Abacus. Thanks for your response and helpWilbert
