Cork Airport Elevated?

Featured Replies

Would someone please check your Cork (EICK) scenery to see if the airport is elevated or on a huge plateau? Several years ago I started using the excellent IFSD scenery package and at that time the airport was elevated. I lost track of any updates which might have fixed the problem. If you know where to get an update please let me know. Thanks!Airbus

I'm not sure which scenery version you're using. I saw on FlightSim a large scenery file from IFSD named "Irish Airports Scenery". It's about 30mb and the read me file with it states the following..."IFSD Scenery------------v1.11v1.12 update. The zip file contains the original v1.11 IFSD scenery plus the 1.12 update. Install v1.11 first and then v1.12.The IFSD site where this scenery was available has closed down. Following several requests I am uploading it to AvSim but I don't have the author's permission. As they have ceased work on FS scenery it is unlikely they will object to this being uploaded to a 'free' site.Ray ProudfootCheshire, [email protected] 2008."If you're running version 1.12 then you have the latest version of the software it seems. The elevation issues might be caused by a setting in your FS9.cfg file named TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL. The default FS9 value for this is 19 but many people run it at 20 or 21 which can cause elevation issues at certain airports. FlyTampa Seattle becomes plateau-ish when running at TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 so FlyTampa came out with a flatten file to fix it. I looked at FlightSim and didn't see a flatten file so either there isn't one or they don't have it. Check your setting regardless, if you find it at anything higher then 19 you can put it back to 19 and see if it helps. If you do, however, other scenery might not look as detailed as you might be used to because you've just reduced your global elevation detail.Mark

I'm puzzled by this.I have had this scenery installed for many years and ist fits in with my adjoining terrain nicely. My FS9.cfg setting is:TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 and to be honest I can't really think why that setting would have the slightest effect on the airport. I would certainly not consider reducing the quality of my entire simulator's setup for a fault in a scenery - there has to be a proper solution. It has been on my system too long for me to remember whether I had to modify anything to make it work. The only file that I have tinkered with is the AFD file, I specifically remember adding a hold short position to allow take-offs on Runway 35 to go out via 7/25 but its possible I made other changes at the same time. It doesn't look as if I have made any flattens or pulled any similar tricks. The problem is, of course, that you an I are probably using different meshes and other add-ons, so it is difficult to compare. It would be worth checking your airport's elevation, make sure the elevation, each runaway and all four start points are shown at 502 feet ASL using AFCAD2 or AFX. The go to the airport using the FS9 default DC-3, press Shift-Z a couple of times to see your elevation on the screen. The DC-3 cockpit position is 9.9 feet AGL, so it should read 511.9 feet on the screen. (Sorry, the DC-3 is the only one I can keep in my head!).If you are getting 511.9 on screen, then the airport is working correctly but not the surrounding terrain. If you get a much greater figure, there is something pushing the airport up and you may or may not solve this with a flatten file.Tell us how you get on with the above and I or somebody else can perhaps help from there.John
