In Need of a Little Windows Help

I have a dual boot system; XP-Pro and Windows7Today I installed a 64bit version of XP, replacing the 32 bit system.I wrongly assumed the boot-up option screen was controled by Windows7, so now of course, it just boots straight into XP-Pro.Is there any way of fixing this, or do I need to reinstall Windows7Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dougal,I'm not an expert on this stuff but you did request any feedback so here goes ...Each OS install almost certainly is going to overwrite the MBR -- master boot record -- with whatever is appropriate for the incoming OS. Therefore you will boot to the most recently installed OS, I do believe. So ...I have no idea how you got your initial dual-boot setup to work -- I'm not very knowledgable about this stuff -- but in the end you may need a multi-OS boot manager, which is basically a utility for swapping the contents of the MBR and then firing up the selected OS.No, I don't know what utilities might work here, it's been many years since I've done anything in this area.I don't know whether the following will help but here's a link to a relevant Wikipedia article ...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi_boot

Hello,Reinstall Windows 7 like you make the first time.Regards.bye.gifGus.

Easiest solution is to go and get Vista Boot pro - it works fine with Win7. Editing the boot menu in Vista/Win7 via BCDedit is a pain in the you know where - totally different kettle of fish to XP's boot.ini. You can get it here. Free, and easy to use!

Gus, True, but only if the OS is older or equivalent - eg 98/2K/XP will get picked up when you install XP to a different partition. Win7/Vista won't get picked up by the XP install - not least since they use a totally different boot manager.Leo

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I've been searching for hours, but it now looks like VistaBootPro is no longer freeware. Am I correct?

Sorry bout that, Dougal - last time I looked, it was still free, and the version I have stored is certainly the same..Quick Googling brings up http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 - I seem to remember this a while back as well; it does pretty well the same job, and a scan of the site indicates it should be freeware...Leo

Many thanks for the help guys.Special thanks to Leo & Gus. I now have VistaBoot Pro installed and can hopefully sort out my woes.I certainly hope so because my FSX registry information resides on the currently unavailable partition.

Hello Again!Great new & not such great news. I now have my Windows7, and thus my FSX installation. I now don't have a boot option for my XP-64 system:-(Sadly, VistaBootPro didn't work:-( Although it reported having 'Recovered' the Win7 entry, it then couldn't see it.I then tried the Windows7 command prompt tool; bootrec.exe' This recovered the Win7 system perfectly, but not only failed to see the XP installation, but also removed the boot option too.So, I'm back where I started - with Windows7 only! The XP installation is physically there, so if anyone know how to add it to my boot screen, I'd be a very happy bunny :( (neither VistaBootPro, nor the 'Advanced startup' options of Win 7 currently see it!)
