August 15, 200916 yr Hi guys just after an opinion about a strange problem that seems to have come from nowhere!!After about three weeks of not using my PC i switched it on today and sat in amazement as my temps went from approx 38 c to 98 c without running any programes at all .At first i have to admit i never noticed as i switched it on and was doing something elese when I heard the fans reach a new level of noise I have never heard before !!.Now all the fans are running as expected , there is no overclock , verified by resetting all bios settings to default , But the back of the power supply grille after about five minutes is almost too hot to touch , even though the fan is running.( power supply is approx 9 months old)I have done the most obvious thing ie cleaned out the pc of all dust , there are no obstuctions( or dead spiders in the case). So I was wondering if you guys had any ideas before I get the screwdriver and credit card out Thanks Paul
August 15, 200916 yr before you get the credit card out for some bigger purchases or "fixes," the thermal paste may be shot. Im just suggesting. Go and get artic silver and see if that works. if not then it sounds like the heatsink. You probably already expected that though lol. have a good one. :( FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠 Matt Kubanda, 7950X3D, 64GB RAM, RTX 5090@4k, MSFS 2024
August 15, 200916 yr Hllo,Do you use Speedfan ?http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.phpIt's a nice freeware (easy to use) and you will seen many parameters about temperatures - voltages - fans speed - CPU usage .. etc...I don't think the heatsink is your problem at all.Maybe a voltage problem ?You can also check the CPU usage with the Windows task manager (CTRL ALT DEL)Regards.Gus.
August 15, 200916 yr If it is that hot at the back of your power supply... something is very wrong... probably at bad power supply...Your cpu getting that hot from nowhere is very unusual, but the heat from the cpu cooler should be ventilating from your case fan ..Remove your side cover and try to make a decision from doing that.. is it your power supply that is getting hot or the cpu.. or both..The power supply should not be getting that hot even under full load...Try a spare power supply if you have one...Does it get that hot if your in the CMOS screen?
August 15, 200916 yr Check your heatsink and make sure it's properly attached, first and foremost. May as well detach it and check the thermal paste while you're at it.
August 19, 200916 yr Thanks for your thoughts guys !I think I will try switching the power supply first , as I am fortunate enough to surrounded by potential donor PC's .Then if that fails i will try reseating the heatsink.Hopefully one solution or the other should be the right one .( I hope its the power supply , cos I always manage to get more thermal paste on me than anywhere else :( )Paul
