32bit vs. 64 bit

Featured Replies

Hi everyone! I have decided that it is time to upgrade from my Windows XP and get into Vista. I have read a lot about 64bit operating systems and I have to admit I don't know the difference between 32 and 64. I have read good things about Windows 7 and also getting Vista 64 bit is a good step to getting there, a bit cheaper too. Is this the right way to go? Does FSX work better with a 64 bit system? And also, would I see an increase in performance if I change OS? I am running an AMD processor at 2.81 GHZ and an ATI Radeon 1950 pro video card. I plan on doing a total rebuild in the near future due to the recent success stories I have read on here, any advice would be very welcome! Mark

FSX will run with more stability on the 64 bit version of Windows. Additionally, you can add additional system memory so there may be a performance increase. The biggest thing for me was that I stopped getting out of memory errors and crashing when I was using Win XP pro. I bumped up to Vista 64 and it has a been a pure delight. Those with Windows 7 say it's even better!

I have run FSX on XP SP3 32B, Vista 32b and Vista 64b...FSX runs much better on 64b os...Been running FSX on Win 7 RC 64b for a few weeks and Win 7 64b seems to be a much better OS for FSX..Just my opinion..YMMV...Lou

Thanks for the information! I have been thinking of going to Vista premium 64bit and I think that might be the way to go and then upgrade to Windows 7 when it arrives. I also am looking forward to seeing what DX10 can do for me, I have heard of some great things with that so maybe it is time to step into the present with my operating system!Mark

If I were you I would not even bother with Vista. Go straight to W7 when it is released in October. W7 will load all the proper drivers for you and it is a much smoother operating system. W7 has much better speed with FSX. With me the choice is simple. Despite Microsoft's warning to not have W7 installed on your main computer I have had beta and RC and I have ordered the a new 64bit for both my computers. Just make sure you run the upgrade adviser first to make sure all your hardware is compatible. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7...de-advisor.aspx
